like most comments say, they should allow U13 in discord, in my preference they should allow 10-higher, my reason for this is because most U13s that age could be mature, they should be allowed to have discord with the parent's consent.

diet_bread I agree with you, discord should allow having 10+ but with parental consent, something like having channels prohibited and adding a channel for that age of 10 or more, it is unfair for discord to say that you have to be 13 years or older , if someone moderator, or someone assistant discord reads this (even if I think it does not happen) please allow 10 years or more but with restrictions.

Ok so it isn’t bad being underage on discord the servers determine wether or not they are child friendly or not being on discord doesn’t pose a big threat to children who already know about the stuff they shouldn’t know at a young age isn’t their fault or parents it’s the internets fault for being so wide open but I’m not saying shut it down like another thing some discord servers are 13 and over when it doesn’t have inappropriate stuff children shouldn’t see. Discord should be for around 10 or older because by the time your in double digits you should start growing up and some don’t but most parents are self aware about the children activity and the ones who aren’t and the children who keep things secret and are able to say stuff children don’t usually say then they are mentally older than their actuall age and it sometimes doesn’t matter because even if you are underaged some keep the fact they are underaged secret. So sometimes it doesn’t matter because once the child is introduced to something on the internet they can’t get rid of it so they should learn how to keep if secret and now how to not blurt out everything they say.

diet_bread I also agree, just that it should be 11+, because that's the age where you enter middle school (in the US) because Being underage doesn't mean that your dumb. Nowadays Kids are getting smarter, not dumber. The only kids who shouldn't be on Discord are toxic kids.

Discord shoud be 10+ or 12+ Cuase It is true that some kids could be smarter then Teenagers. But if there is someone that is U13, You never know cuase like I said kids could be smarter than teens, What Im saying is theres a chance that kids could be watching videos like "Heres what to do when someone scammed me" etc..

Michail Olegovich Wasowski I am from Michigan and I know what other countries think of the states. But there is no reason to believe that all parents in the u.s. are that bad. I know a lot of people who are brats for other reasons than bad parenting. And even more people who are just good people all around.

All this speculation aside, my one, single and only request to Discord staff would be to introduce parental consent as a measure to comply with COPPA and let kids under 13 use Discord without lying about their age. As a parental activation, we can use either email or credit card transactions. This would actually be useful for parents and kids because it's not just kids lying about their age, parents often help them to and sometimes can create accounts for the kids themselves.

Why? Because waiting until 13 is not protecting children, it is just like avoiding vaccines while living in sterile conditions, or avoiding school through homeschooling because of school bullying and scandals with teachers.

Yes kids are different, yes kids are smarter that we think, and yes kids can bypass parental consent or steal parents' credit cards. But it would be much worse invasion of privacy if you were interrogating everyone about what was going on just after registration.

Toxic people can be everywhere, online and offline. That's a given and has nothing to do with COPPA and parental consent. It's up to parents to watch their children and actually have an interest in what the kids are doing. Shortly put, parents should be friends with their kids. However, for Discord staff, parental consent is one and only way to let kids in, as well as protect them. And I seriously request Discord staff to implement parental consent as a way to comply with COPPA while letting children register. Especially when Facebook has Messenger Kids and Google has Family Link. As well as Roblox uses email activation.

Tri-tip may be right but some countries may allow it and only USA has coppa so ya. Also many people in this chat know what should be done I might make a server for this. Anyways they dont need to change much caus if google lets kids use there site then discord can too just block some stuff like vcs and done. Also coppa was gonna kill youtube in USA I live in europe not a problem for me but youtube died. OK u understand me just update the TOS (┬┬﹏┬┬)

They should be a kiddie version where they would have limitations, I have some underaged friends, I would like to talk to them. The kid version would be very limited, it also has censor chat. Parents would control the account, they could disable sever joining, and only as a DM service. There should also be 13+ discord servers, because, I don't want discord to change, I don't want to be PG, all the time.

    Here's what I want.

Discord all-age. Some kids act mature enough to hang with teens.

But, for people under 13, they must then add a parents email and phone number before they can interact.
Enable chat censoring for them (swears etc)

Server owners can ban them or kick with a specified reason, then it will be emailed and messaged to the parents so they know why did their child got banned.

When creating a server or group DM, you must input if it's 13+ or not. 13- accounts cannot join 13+ servers. But 13+ can access 13- servers

Your butt will be kicked if you be under 13.

I think it is completely fine for children to use it, I think the discord mods should maybe take action!

Yes, i think it is great idea.

I really do not know why Discord did not do it. COPPA says that kids under 13 year old can use services with parents consent.

I think Discord just do not wanna do it because hate kids or do not want spend time to moderate people under 13.

now i'm not an expert but still,i think rules should be with-in the law,for example my friend used discord when he was under the age of 13 and his parents didn't complain becouse he wasn't even doing anything bad on it,he mostly joined gaming communities from games he play and noting else (at last he told me that) and i can confirm i use the discord the same way (i'm older than 13 btw). like i don't see what's the problem discord is managing their service pretty good as it seems and just inforceing the law seems as a resonable think to do,besides they alredy implemented a lot of "safety" features and i mean if the internet is

SO DANGEREUS why not allow internet aces only to 13+ year old demografic anyways :/

If you are underage and communicating within discord, no matter how mature you are, it is illegal. I understand some issues you may have with this rule, but this is a federal piece of government legislation of which applies to Discord. End of the sentence. Just wait until you are 13 years of age or older and you'll be fine.

  • hikayamasan353

andrew, You're missing the entire point. It is not illegal for children under 13 to create accounts. But it's illegal for Discord to let these children register without parental consent. This topic is all about convincing Discord staff to introduce parental consent as required by COPPA to let children in. This is exactly what we request here for.

  • DiamondGamerr1

Hika you are right, discord needs to think about those who are underage, especially during the pandemic where people need to communicate, discord is a easy app to use for this and if kids can't use it...... what are they suppose to use? and also them taking action on servers that allow underage users is really just stupid because now that I know there is a community who is like me and wants them to remove that law like what if someone makes a server? and that ignores the age rule as an act of protest? like it's really stupid. Andrew also say if your under 13 and you like a game a lot and want to know it's updates or talk with it's community, you would have to join the discord for this and if it's a kids game then like why shouldn't those kids be allowed to get online it probably would not take to much time to make features on discord that make it safer for underage users, and it is legal from the COPPA law.

yea kids make up a surprising amount of discord’s users, why haven’t they done something yet?

(REPLYING TO https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/360048312192/comments/360011012971) WOW. You really have a good point. Because someone named Caleb The Kawaii T-Rex called me the K word, when he is 20. Yet, I am younger than him but know better. So, why does discord have to kick or ban all Under 13s just because they are 12 and under?
