Feature requests: DM channels and auto-DND while driving
Hi guys,
I'm an avid user of Discord and really love the service, but there are some ways it can be improved. I have two ideas in particular that I think would improve the service in a big way: DM channels and Automatic Do Not Disturb while driving.
DM channels
So you might be wondering what the point of having DM channels would be. Well, here's the thing - channels aren't just useful for large groups of members like you might find on a server. Even when there are only two people chatting, it can be helpful to have a way to organize the discussion and revisit older topics if wanted. For instance, if a friend and I start out talking games and then move on to politics, we would then have to scroll waaaay up in the DM to see where the conversation began to shift topics if we ever wanted to go back to discussing games, or we'd have to just give up on that idea and move onto another topic. It's a little frustrating when you have to either circle back around to a topic you want to discuss, or abandon it completely.
It would also help keep DM roleplays organized. Believe it or not, the roleplaying scene on Discord is absolutely massive, with many servers reaching over 100 members and several posts a minute depending on post format and number of active users vs. lurkers. So naturally, there are a lot of RPs that take place in DMs as well, where people will sometimes explore how well their characters work together or create their own stories just for the fun of it. But sometimes, you have to step out of character to say something, which means talking in parentheses, (like this). Sometimes, the out-of-character chat gets so long that you have to scroll way up to read the other player's last post. It would be better if we were able to have channels in DMs, so that we could have one or more channels for the RP, and a couple channels for OOC chat.
Automatic Do Not Disturb while driving
I don't really need to explain what this one does, so instead I'll just explain why it would be useful. Millions of us have Discord on mobile, and millions of us are prone to distractions while driving. As we all know, distracted driving is beyond dangerous, so there need to be ways to cut down on the number of distractions. This optional feature (preferably enabled by default) would use GPS to detect when the user is in a car and driving, and automatically set their account to Do Not Disturb, reducing the likelihood of an accident as a result of texting on Discord while driving. Optimally, it would also disable any form of interaction with the app when moving over 5 mph by displaying a screen saying something like, "Focus on the road!" or "Watch where you're going!" or something similar. Discord is all about account safety, what with 2FA and so on - why not also try to help keep people alive?
