Emoji Aliases (for both custom emoji and unicode emoji)
Many standard emojis have multiple shortcodes/aliases. For example,
& :+1:
both yield 👍, and :party_popper:
& :tada:
both yield 🎉.
This is a useful feature, because emojis might be used for multiple purposes, and having an alias for each purpose can turn emoji use into a sort of language. I have friends who don’t have nitro, but still use emoji shortcodes for the emojis they like, because the shortcode an emoji is given is often treated like an expression / reaction in-and-of itself (kinda like /me
used to be).
I propose 2 changes:
- Users should be able to set their own personal shortcodes for emojis they have access to (including standard unicode emojis)
- Server owners should be able to set multiple aliases for the custom emojis they upload
I’ve seen server owners burn emoji slots as a workaround for 2, but this is hardly fair, since smaller servers have limited access to emoji slots when compared to bigger servers (who might have more nitro boosters). Implementing proposal 2 would at the very least level the playing field, and implementing 1 would just be a nice feature to have.
