cant find friends to invite

For some reason inviting other friends to join a group chat or a server chat seems to be ridiculously convoluted.

I'll see a friend online but when I hit the add friend to a chat button they don't appear in the list and I have to manually copy the server link or whatever to send to them so they can join.
