Empty Space in Chat and DMs, Plus Font Scaling

It seems like most everyone is being very vocal about the font changes, but I'd like to weigh in on it(pun intended). The changes to the body font are okay for the most part, they were better before but they're not bad, for me at least, now. Where I have an issue is the bottom left and friends list name font weight and kerning. It's too bold while the spacing between the letters is one pixel too small. That makes it hard to read because the spacing between the letters is smaller. Change font and kerning back and I think people will be happy.

The other less talked about issue I have is that the empty space between messages, channels, and other elements is too big. Even with the scaling turned down t makes the whole app feel bloated and it doesn't change in IRC compact mode. Changing the font scale just makes things blurry and doesn't reduce the UI padding much. Same goes for changing the app-wide scale, everything feels like it ate too much. Maybe they just need to shrink the padding around the UI elements without changing how the text scales.

Ultimately, I really hope that these changes either are reverted or they listen to feedback and add in some more per-user font and spacing customization. Maybe even letting us install cusom fonts? I don't think that'll happen but one can hope.

    Totally agree with all of your observations, and feel the same way.

    Suspect people are leaving the objections you've raised out of their comments, as the nausea/eye strain is somewhat interfering with analysis of the issues, but I think the spacing is as much to blame for the physical issues as the font itself.
