Pressing enter to create a new line in chat
rather than having to press shift + enter there would be a drop down box having the choice to press enter to
A. send the message
B. create a new line in the chat box
But by doing that you would have to click send rather just pressing enter

but some people don’t like to mouse over to the send button to send a message. Hitting enter to send is more quicker and is by default of all PC messaging apps to hit enter to send -8 -
Ctrl+Enter to send message is something many people are used to, especially if they create new lines with only enter.

It seems like this could be an option presented as "Enter Behavior" and you could choose whether it sends a message or creates a new line.
12 -
The shift-enter behaviour is used for word processors, to represent a new line, inside a paragraph.
The enter key is used to create a paragraph. An instant messaging app/program usually uses enter to send.
Usually, there are *some* with options to change the behaviour.
Pressing shift-enter is usually used for a newline. When an instant messaging app/program changes this behaviour, usually it changes to enter for newlines and shift-enter to send.
Adding the option to change is good. Making it mandatory is horrible.

Weighing in here to say, I’m crippled at the moment because of the newest update... using ipad with Bluetooth keyboard, I’m required to poke the screen to send any message. No combination of key + Enter will only create new line and not send the message.

I would appreciate having an option to set new line to just Enter and having send be cntl +Enter or similar

sorry for necroposting, but I double this

Agreed! This option would be deeply appreciated. Especially in the mobile app

I mean it creates inconsistency in my user experience between all apps I use on my PC, and I have to remember where to press enter to create a new line and where to press ctrl plus enter. Huh

Thanks. Thing I want here.

strong agree. indoctrinated from years of using Slack where "enter" = new line and "cmd-enter" = send.

- its shift and then enter

looks like someone already had this idea so i'm bumping this thread too

Why not just make it a setting. I think every messaging app now has this - you can configure it to use Enter for newlines and Shift/Ctrl/Cmd Enter to send the message.

Hitting enter to send is more quicker and is by default of all PC messaging apps to hit enter to send And some of us would far, far prefer to have the option. If you want your 'enter' key to send the message, great, switch one tiny little slider and you have what you want. The rest of us, can move the slider the other way as we write short newsletters with separate paragraphs, long complicated list systems, all sorts of stuff. And the first time you're doing that, get well into it, then your CTRL doesn't quite press down or sticks and it sends an unfinished message that was meant to be sent later as a completed work. I'm not arguing for or against either one, one just as equally as the other. But we should DEFINITELY have the option to switch it, as well as some mass delete options for channels, DMs, and more. Just my two cents. Giving a choice of comfort to both sides of that coin would be so amazing of them. 1 -
We Japanese have to press Enter every time we type a word to get the correct conversion of it. That's why it's really common for us to accidentally send our message while we are still typing. I'm sure many Japanese will be glad if we could get this feature as an option.

so estou aqui a falar como uma pessoa normal

Yes please! I've turned this option on in every chat client going back to IRC and AIM. Let us toggle between:
- Enter sends, Shift + Enter creates newline
- Shift + Enter sends, Enter creates newline
Or just let us edit the inputs for Send Message and Insert Newline on the Keybinds settings page.

Would like to bump this again! I swear this has only been a thing for me recently…? Maybe in the last month? Please change it.
-1 -
Please, please, please give us the option to change this. The default can even stay as it is now, with those of us who want to swap enter and shift+enter having to go change the slider. I just want to be able to do so at all.

There is now a send button. Check Settings > Accessibility and look for a Send Button option. I'm not sure though if it does what you want to do.

That's not what we want – this option is useful most likely for devices with a touchscreen, or for users who really like to use the mouse rather than the keyboard.
We needed a possibility to do a new line by pressing just Enter and sending the message by Shift/Ctrl/Cmd + Enter (the current way is the opposite) – this would not only make creation of new lines safer, it also generally prevents from accidental sending the message by pressing Enter before it's finished.
I would like to point out that the most of people at here demand only the Shift + Enter shortcut for sending the message, but it should be configurable to any combination of Shift/Enter/Cmd + Enter (Cmd for Mac users). And of course, this option should be optional, the default should stay as it is for now, i.e. Enter to send the message.

Slack, RocketChat and Zulip all let you configure your preferred method, as do other clients. It's reasonable to expect the same option in Discord.

AGREED! This current behavior drives me nuts.
It kinda made sense with the chat-focus of Discord, but now with forums... :o Having -return- submit a FORUM post is unheard of and absolutely counter-intuitive :(-1 -
Looks like such an option is still not added.
But i also would like to have it.
i often post an unfinished message while i want to add a new line instead.

Old post, I know, but…Yes please!!!
Give us the option to change the behavior of the Enter key.
(I prefer Ctrl+Enter to send myself, but would take anything. :-)
