Why is PM notifications considered the same as channel activity notification?

I'm new to discord and this baffles me to a point where it breaks my brain because it's so dumb.

Apparently, some random person typing in some channel is considered of the same level of importance as being mentioned by name or receiving a PM. Huh?

You can disable notifications which means all notifications or mute individual servers which means you'll not be notified of mentions by name.

I only want 2 notifications, if i'm being mentioned or if someone PM's me. Notifications should have their own individual setting.

    There's not only muting, there is a more specific setting with notifications that allows you to change from all notifications to just mentions.

    In messages there's 17 switches for notifications, only 1 is for chat, and that one disables everything. What you're thinking of is individual server notification settings. While being able to set individual is nice and all, it's not very nice you can't set global.
