Many Colleges and Universities have official and unofficial Discord Communities that are thriving with activity. As indicated by the launch of the new Discord for College program, discord seems to be growing this as a promoted use of the platform.
In order to make moderating and administrating these communities better it would be great to be able to have a supported way to link a discord account to a university account through OAUTH2, or as a supported service provided through SAML (principally o365 and gsuite). By setting such things up, we would be allowing for safer more secure communities.
What would/could linking do?
- Allow for custom role(s) ie. 'verified' by oAuth, allowing mods/admins to provision access to channel(s) or other rights and privilege's based on a confirmed identity.
- Hook into other returned attributes for class year, department, or even name to auto provision role(s) and set nicknames on a server (if a server wanted).
- Allow mods to match discord IDs to University IDs in order to prevent brigading / harassment / trolling or other trust and Safety related issues that are very difficult to moderate right now. Especially with the desire to publicly post a discord link to grow communities, it can become an issue when bad actors find these invite links.
