Discord on Apple M1 Devices

Discord doesn't seem to work natively on the new ARM-Macs and only with Rosetta 2 Translation at the expense of performance, features and power usage. It would be really nice if Apple Silicon Users could enjoy Discord on the new Laptops and Desktops as well.

    +1 for native.
    No noise suppression on Discord M1 which is a large downside.
    Slow, buggy on all versions. Sometimes causing major system slowdown or all crashes.

    It’s a shame Discord are not replying.

    For what seems to be a "small user base" at the start of the thread... Seems like there's a lot of comments here wanting Apple Silicon support :)

    Still a smaller base than Linux. I’d prefer Discord to focus their efforts on giving Linux feature parity, as more of their core demographic, gamers, are on Linux than macOS

    Discord grew to be more than just for gaming and in the category general desktop os share macos still wins macOS: 29.2% Linux: 25.3% Which will just grow more now that windows might lose a lot of mid to high end to Apple Silicone.

    Native support for m1 really is a need, rosette's discord crashes a lot and is a really nasty battery hog. Most of the time it's taking about 20% of the usage. It's seriously no good. I had to install the iPad version manually on my m1 mac so I could finally use discord properly again. Not happy at all and no response from Discord yet.

    Screen sharing is impossibly CPU-heavy under Rosetta, and Electron has been updated for M1 for a while now. Discord devs have no excuse at this point they're just ignoring their userbase. I have tried to use Discord on Linux, it barely functions. On macOS under an Apple M1, it hogs up battery and resources and runs super slow. Like, it really should not be that hard! Electron has updated for a while now, Slack updated their app extremely quickly! How is it that the web version of Discord works better than the app??? This is madness.

    A lot of people saying works fine etc etc, of course it runs fine, but with some expenses, like higher RAM usage etc, and it get worse when you have a lot of servers and use the voice chat all together, and don't tell me that the solution would be to leave the servers and stop using voice chat if I want the app to use less than 1,5GB ram....🙄

    Apple themselves spell out that Rosetta 2 is not a replacement for updating your application to work with ARM on MacOS.   That doesn't mean Discord *has* to, but if they don't, when Rosetta 2 goes away it will just stop working.  That probably won't happen real soon but if history repeats itself Rosetta 2 will not be available forever.

    From Apple:

    "Rosetta is a translation process that allows users to run apps that contain x86_64 instructions on Apple silicon. Rosetta is meant to ease the transition to Apple silicon, giving you time to create a universal binary for your app. It is not a substitute for creating a native version of your app."

    Electron apps are usually just a bloated mess. Fast to deploy, of course, but inefficient in almost every other way. Native apps are the only way for a great experience. Whatever tech they use, it would be nice if the advertised features worked as expected. A group of friends and I tried live video sessions via Discord a couple of times and it was a mess. Slow video, bad sound, dropped connections. We had to switch apps mid-session.

    Oh and one more thing, it would be nice if there wasn't an update every single time I launched discord. I want an app to just open and do its thing.

    It would really help us out if you upvote the idea since feedback contributes greatly to our decision making of which features and fixes to implement in the future based on what our community wants.

    I'm so sorry again that we don't have a current solution for you at this time, but I like to think that anything is possible in the future.

    Anyways, I upvoted, I hope they have Apple Silicon support in either 2022 or 2023.
