Feature Request: Support for HEIF images

It's been one year since this request was made and I believe that the number of phones using heif has significantly raised and the lack of support makes sharing photos with friends extremely inconvenient because when you do so, all they see is a .heic file (even though the discord client previews the photo just fine - most likely due to using a system default image viewer).

So, are there any plans to support the format?

    Thanks.

Still doesn't support heic format :(

My phone by default takes photos in heic format and it's a hassle having to convert them into something less efficient just to share to discord.

All Samsung phones starting from at least 2019 support heif.
There's no license fee to Discord. It clearly states in the exceptions and distribution sections that software is excluded.
Device and OS manufacturers pay it, not random software developers.

Many android phones use it too, pretty sure samsung phones use it by default after ONE UI 3.0

All iPhones use this format so +1 from my side

Please add HEIC/HEIF support. I cannot share photos on discord from my Samsung Note10+

But we are not talking about HEVC, but only about HEIF

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Efficiency_Image_File_Format

And like almost every IPhone users have an HEIF format available.

They would at least make a converter, that converts the image from HEIF into JPEG to not have to select individual image (this is way how Samsung gallery converts from HEIF into JPEG) and send one by one

Samsung + Apple is already probably 80% of all mobile market. Add to that Windows 10 and OSX, both with native support for it and you already have 95% of all desktop market.

Sure, let's not add features that majority of users could take advantage of because a couple of minor players don't support it. Very logical.🤦‍♂️

HEIF seems to be a better technology than JPEG, many phones have it enabled by default, so I think it's in the best interest of Discord to support it. Also from what I've read the patent licensing fees only apply to physical distribution of content

It has been 2 years or more since this was posted and as previously mentioned, it is only becoming a bigger problem. Neither .heic nor .heif are going anywhere as formats so an update from Discord I feel is highly needed.

I don't want to be rude but original request is 2 years old - what have you been doing all that time? It's really annoying sice I got new phone I'm not able to sent pictures and no setting JPEG format in my camera is not option. One word - incompetency.

That work around works if you haven't taken a photo yet.. And at least in my camera app it's like 5 or 6 taps to get to it. Really clunky to do it every time. 😕

We probably won't get it for Xmas. Discord is built on Electron, which is built on Chromium, which at this point in time doesn't support this format🙁 See https://caniuse.com/heif

Bumping this cuz I'm encountering it daily now that my phone updated.

its bonkers that this hasn't been implemented yet.

Discord could at least convert the picture to JPEG like how Apple does. Sending pictures from Samsung Gallery works because it converts the picture first before sending it to the app.

Bumping as this is near daily pain in the butt working with people.

Of course, I also want them to add this support, but my small workaround so I don't have to convert every time... If when taking a picture specifically to send in Discord, swap the save output format before taking the picture, then swap back after taking the picture.

Here's to hoping that we get a nice Christmas gift from Discord this year...

Still happening. HEIC is *i believe* Apple default, still shows as a file and friends with windows can't seem to open it.

The new Samsung update takes all of my pictures as heif files :/

Been dealing with this for a bit now. I send a picture, it pops up as .heic instead of a picture, and then I remember I did it wrong and have to send it again. Super annoying, non-optimal from all perspectives. A simple auto-convert for android would resolve my main woes.

This is hands down my main annoyance about Discord.

Conspiracy theory: they won’t fix it as with Heic you pack more data for the same size, and are less likely to hit the 8mb limit => less nitro sold

Indeed, on iOS it is a pretty annoying omission

In Samsung gallery it function image by image when you are in the detail and share it from there, otherwise it sends group heif images

Making tons of money on the fact the other players in the market suck worse. My own experience with support about a UI bug was so outright hostile, I can only eagerly await the inevitable successor to Discord.

Okay this has been seriously annoying me in Discord for a long time. Been a Samsung user since the S10 and yeah this HEIC showing up as a file thing has been problem for both me and my dad with an LG phone, the camera takes HEIC by default and Discord is THE ONLY app left that doesn't support them now. Every single other app has been updated to support this function years ago.

We're talking Telegram, Signal, Twitter, Instagram, probably What's App (but screw Facebook so I'm not gonna check), Reddit, Imgur, Amino, Slack, built-in messaging app, hell even the Gmail app can auto-convert them. I can't name a single app on my phone or that I've ever even heard of that doesn't support them... Except. Discord.

Bump! I don’t have an Android but a friend of mine does, and this is annoying, I have to open the file, download it, and upload it as a png or jpeg for him

They are far too busy making money hand over fist to care about usability or general user experience. Once a viable alternative shows up to compete, this will bite them. They still won't care, of course, as they will continue to be distracted by swimming in their giant money bin.

Mxx: let's manage expectations here. Even if chromium does not natively support HEIF it should be converted on the fly. There are libraries in javascript capable of doing exactly that. While this is not perfect this would end up being 20x more user friendly.

Technik: I was half trolling with that conspiracy theory :-)

I was about to rant some more, but I have to admit that things are now much, much better on iOS. Previously images shared from the iOS photo app to Disord were converted to jpeg while photos added directly from Discord to the chat were not. This is now fixed, and pictures are consistently converted to jpeg, regardless of the way they were added to the conversation.

If the same could be done on Windows you won't hear me complain about that matter!

@Technik Somehow, I don't think not having enough money is the problem. How is Discord making less money than Telegram when they sell your data to advertisers Facebook-style and TG doesn't? Telegram also doesn't have Nitro to make them the big bucks like Discord does. "Telegram Premium"/"Telegram Gold" memes have been a thing for a long while and yet they still don't have a premium option. Thank god, free animated stickers FTW. (Also plz don't ban me Discord mods I'm not saying Telegram is better)

Anyhow that aside, I do see the point about licensing prices but from how I understand it, they don't actually have to pay that if they rely on the decoder built into the OS. Windows, Mac OS, Android, and iOS have a built-in API to use it and even a built-in API to convert them to JPEG before uploading.

Discord even shows the image preview in the file browser when you tap on the image, likely using the built-in API, but then once it finishes uploading, that image thumbnail suddenly becomes a file upload. Talk about a broken and inconsistent UI experience!

And yes it would be nice if we moved on to a newer format like AV1 but uh, tell Apple, Samsung, Google, Huawei, LG (okay not them anymore), Sony (both phones AND cameras), and even GoPro that. Cause their images ALL save as HEIC right now. It's up to platforms to support the standards that are commonplace on user's devices.

    Needs to be supported.

Samsung Gallery still auto converts, but only one photo can be selected and such.  It is crappy.  As for free auto-convert-to-jpeg-or-whatever libraries, there are plenty of free ones that can do it server side or client side.  There are libraries that can do it externally or as part of their existing framework.  There is literally zero reason except exceptional indifference to prevent them from doing this.  The whole idea it is a dead and unused format is dumb.  That we are having this conversation should be proof enough, but every other client supports it.  I use Telegram increasingly much with my friends simply because we got tired of dealing with the jank of trying to pass files back and forth with Discord.  I bought Nitro so I can transfer whatever dang size of photo I want.  It isn't a money issue.  It is simply more user-hostile interface design.
