IOS badge notifications
-
Agreed! Discord is superior to all other group messaging apps I’ve tried, but it’s the only one that doesn’t offer a badge app icon for general notifications, and it’s a killer.
I understand that it would be a LOT of notifications if it popped up a badge for every message on every server, but it would be lovely to be able to tailor it to specific channels & servers!17 -
Throwing another vote in favor of this. It's the last hurdle in getting my friends to migrate to Discord.
There's another (less clearly worded, less focused) Feedback item on this topic that interested folks should upvote as well:
https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/360042607471-iOS-app-icon-red-dot-notification-for-mobile-17 -
Upvoting all of these. I’ve been told it’s “working as intended”; which is absolutely ridiculous. “This is to make sure that you won't be bugged for spam messages that shouldn't really concern you”. That’s a great sentiment, but literally there are already 2 individual and dedicated settings to specifically avoid that from happening (@ only and mute all). Instead, they’ve made the decision on our behalf to make the button that they took time to program in (all messages) non functional. It makes zero sense. It’s like having a light switch that has on, off, and strobe settings, but the on position does absolutely nothing. If it was working as intended, the setting would actually accomplish what it’s labeled as.

Yes! This is basic functionality that Discord needs to add!
15 -
Just adding more to support the argument that not having this feature is a killer and the only thing holding it back for many people I know from moving away from WhatsApp or Slack.
14 -
This is something I’ve wanted as well. I use a small Discord server for my family messaging, and would like the option for per channel to have badge notifications for every message even if I’m not directly mentioned (this could be a server default setting as well for all channels with overrides per channel).
It seems simple to implement, since all the pieces are already in place.

I'm hoping this can be fixed too - one more voice added to the chorus! I just want the small red badge for a *select* few Discord servers, so I know when friends have replied in our text chats there (any and all replies, not just "@" replies). It's odd, but it seems that features is described here (https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/218892547--Mobile-Notifications-Settings-101) but is not really been implemented yet. I can go into my server that I want to follow, select what appears to be a notification setting that will alert me with the badge, the small red numerical counter on the app icon, but alas it does not work.
13 -
Not receiving a badge icons when a message has been sent into the server which has the "All notifications" enabled is very inconvenient and kind of useless for some user which are checking their Discord only when the badge appears.
This is an issue for iOS as well as Android users.12 -
I can only agree with what has been said above. The current behaviour is not only counter-intuitive, it makes the user experience severely lacking for a certain portion of the user base, while in principle not offering any additional feature for the rest of the users. Really hope proper badging can be implemented as soon as possible.

yeh -- I thought it was a bug -- I have a couple servers with only tiny numbers of friends that use them, and I miss messages from them constantly because of the lack of a badge notification.
9 -
Seems there is some sort of confusion when the desktop app is open because my iOS device isn't getting notifications when the app is open and running on my Mac. When I close the desktop app I start receiving notifications but only @everyone and mentions still produce a badge icon not all messages product a badge icon.

It’s been a year and Discord still hasn’t figured out how to fix this yet??? As others have said, let us set which servers we want notifications for (which is already built in to the app) except give us the notification red dots so we know there have been messages sent! Not tough. Come on, Discord.

So glad to see this thread! I kept checking my configuration and then waiting for new messages and miss them. This is a weird omission. Telegram and Teams does configurable badge notifications so I don’t miss messages while not looking at the phone. A real shame and a deal breaker for moving to or recommending this platform. A big omission on workflow management. A big elimination of otherwise useful servers on the platform.

A badge notification would help so much! I’ve been missing crucial messages and memes from my group. I’ve configured my phone settings so that the messages appear on my lock screen, but often I’m opening my phone to attend to something else, and I forget to check back for the messages I missed if I don’t see the red dot.

SkolVikingsGuy See my message above but I've been told “working as intended” “This is to make sure that you won't be bugged for spam messages that shouldn't really concern you”. Considering it is literally not working as intended, because when you select the setting the setting does not work, there's a lot of issues with their logic. The little red number is not spammy. We all know those people with like 3,000 emails on their badge. If anything by their logic it would turn off banner notifications, I could absolutely understand why those could get spammy especially in a really big server. But, again, they have already built in 2 other functional settings to avoid spam (@ only, Mute All) so. It makes so little sense it's truly mindboggling

Thanks for the response, very helpful.
The other part that then gets confusing is that little number shows up on my Android phone, as you'd expect. So it's inconsistent, which doesn't make sense.
It's so frustrating because I have two groups of family and friends that are trying to use Discord because I tell them how great it is, but this issue is a deal breaker for them.

SkolVikingsGuy np. I am right there with you. This thread is 2 years old and there are several others like it, asking for a basic functionality that has been part of iOS since literally day one. It makes absolutely zero sense why they bothered to code in the button to not have it actually work, and refuse to change it. It's incredibly frustrating and is a massive downside to an otherwise delightful platform. I do not understand why they refuse to pull their app up to par for iphone users. Over half of the smart phones in the US are iphones and like 25% globally. Why would you intentionally handicap your app on that population. And like you mentioned, it's literally JUST on iOS. Badge notifications work perfectly fine on android

Ditto ditto ditto ditto…though I was on crazy pills, makes me feel better but this lack of app icon notification badges per approved channels let alone at all could still drive me full Mugatu

Need this so badly.

I'm on Android, trying to get friends to use Discord, but they've decided not to because of this iPhone issue. So frustrating.
5 -
Can't believe this is now two years old. Wanted to start a group for my family, but all the iPhone users are dealing with this.
5 -
Do we know why they're refusing to add this basic functionality? Is it on purpose for some reason, or is just that they're ignoring the issue?

This needs to be fixed NOW! It has been 2-years, and the functionality is different between IOS and Android, so it cannot be 'working as intended'...
I have a small friend and family group we use to chat, if we were all on iOS we'd use iMessage, but we're not. All of the iOS users are missing the notifications because they do not see badges come up for this group. Then the Android users tell us to change the setting and get upset we don't respond as if it was a chat group. When we say it doesn't put a badge for us their response is 'Check this box and it works' and I have to explain that on IOS we don't get badges like they do, we get the pop-up that goes away but only @Mentions are badged.
Edit: Perhaps let us set a flag in a channel that is 'Important' meaning Notifications and Badges will be sent for every message as if you were @mentioned or @everyone in the channel.

rdehavenl - thanks for sharing.
I don't understand what's happening here. Does anyone at Discord read these posts? Have they said it's by design and won't be fixed? Have they said they'll get to it some day?

Definitely a deal breaker for us. The notification setting should determine this - if set for all notifications, update the chevron (if allowed at iOS level for the app) count.
Until, we avoid using and I continue to given them one star in the App Store. :P

rdehavenl Welcome to the sad illogical party, friend.
Again, the channel flag is totally unnecessary if the settings that already exist in the app just worked as they are advertised to lolSkolVikingsGuy Clearly not. Not that 78 upvotes is a large amount of a thread, but I just don't understand how it goes under the rug for so long with this thread (and others just like it) being active for 2 years.. It's not like iOS users are a tiny fraction of the smartphone population. Even on Instagram they'll say "hey thanks for the comment, go make a post on support.discord.com"
I haven't gone through the official support request channels in a bit but I've done it a few times and never once did I get an answer that it was an issue or that they were looking into amending it.
Here are some of the answers I've gotten over the years, these are quote unquote copy pasted.
11/18/20 "I've confirmed with the team that the red badge notification will only appear for messages where your username or your role is directly mentioned or pinged. This is true even if your notif settings are set you "All Messages".
On the other hand, if you would like to see changes to these systems in the future, then you can definitely vote up the suggestions at feedback.discordapp.com.
It would really help us out if you upvote the idea since feedback contributes greatly to our decision making of which features and fixes to implement in the future based on what our community wants"11/20/20 "Just to clarify, though, this is not a bug but is working as intended. This is to make sure that you won't be bugged for spam messages that shouldn't really concern you. However, I can see the merit of having a full ping notification for messages whether you're mentioned or not and I have shared this with the team for us to ponder on. Sadly, we really don't have an ETA if this can be implemented anytime soon."
1/29/21 "We'd like to clarify that the red badge notification only appears for @mentions. Normal messages that do not have you or your role @mentioned will not produce the red notification badge. However, you should receive banner/push notifications for DMs as long as you have them enabled.
If you really wish to see changes in the future, you're already doing great by following threads on our feedback page.
We do understand the frustration, however, if you have already upvoted suggestions or posted your suggestions on the feedback page, then you've already taken the proper steps to let our team know that you want this as a feature."1 -
Oh my, I'm getting badge notifications about Discord today!
Oh wait, on Gmail, about this thread about a lack of badge notifications on the Discord app... ;)
Seriously though, it's very frustrating. Thanks for the posts of historical responses, I kinda see the spam one.
I'd still very much like the same behaviors as android, an all or none badge notification is a better option than the current.
Though a great stretch goal would be badge notifications by server.

TheOriginalGeoff I definitely don't get their logic behind the spam one because they already have multiple defenses against spam built into the app that work! (Notification settings of Nothing and @ only, as well muting things; individuals, channels, threads, etc) They took the time to build the all messages setting and then decided to just not tun it on.
In my humble opinion the fact that they've applied it only to badge notifications, by far the least intrusive notification you could be spammed by and not like banner notifications or something, seems very counterintuitive. We all those people with like 1,407 unread emails and the big red badge to prove it, almost as big as the app lol
