[Canary] Chat Design Tweak Feedback + Improvements
Introduction:
I am a huge fan of Discord! The app has gotten a lot better over the years. But sometimes you people drag it too far, in my opinion.
Some positives:
You're able to control the space between message groups.
The new quick menu is tremendously handy for quickly reacting to messages, or copying links to refer to it in another chat.
Some negatives:
Even though you're able to control the space between message groups, you're not able to control the space between individual messages in a message group. This is a main problem and makes the app tremendously hard to use. (I use Compact mode, but I've heard it makes """Cozy""" mode even worse.)
The mouse-over highlighting can make the app hard to look at, especially on ping walls (below).
The quick menu that appears when mousing over seems a bit in the middle of the message which is hard to look at IMO. Take a look for yourself. (This is especially apparent on pinged messages.)
The new ping look has some issues, explained in the image below.
Pings are supposed to bring attention to the message, and by emphasizing the entire thing, like meta text, it takes attention away from the main message at hand.
Potential changes:
Addition of a slider in the Appearance tab which changes the space between messages in a message group, rather than just between message groups.
Addition of a toggle in the Appearance tab which allows users to turn the message highlighting on or off. This could be accompanied by a "highlight intensity" slider which makes the boldness of the highlight more or less visible.
Addition of an options tab which allows us to customize our quick menu. This could be below the Windows Settings (or whichever is the bottom).
This menu would allow us to customize how many emoji spots are in our quick menu (and which emojis go into it), and where it is located (lower down, or higher up).
Addition of a toggle in the Appearance tab which allows us to change between the new ping look and the old ping look (see above in "Some negatives").
Conclusion:
In conclusion, I feel that the new changes are very cool and quite useful (despite what others say). However the app is (personally) quite unusable as it is currently. When these changes are tweaked, the app will become much easier and streamlined to use and the overall quality will go up.
I am personally in favor of these changes. They seem very fast and innovative and the highlighting feature will certainly increase the accessibility range of the app.
Post script:
Thank you for reading! Yes, I use Light mode. No, that doesn't mean you should downvote this, for that reason.
If this is in the wrong category, sorry! I don't know where else to put it.
