Don't 'fix' what's not broken: revert changes - invasive pop-ups added / removed message line-breaks
Hover menus are intrusive and prone to accidental presses. I don't ever want anything to randomly appear while I'm trying to click on previously-empty space. Websites do this, and it's infuriating. The option to have all pop-up buttons visible at all times would be my preference - and in the unlikely event that this feature happens, the new UI would be ugly with these new emoji buttons.
People are saying that the new effects (line highlighting) and popup menu have increased resource usage for the discord program. Another reason to remove them (or hide them behind an opt-in setting, so at least all the work that was done is not wasted).
Chat messages from different individuals used to be divided by grey line breaks, making it easier to identify at a glance what exactly is going on during a fast conversation. Although subtle, this really made a difference to clarity, but it has been removed.
Edit:
We need to ask the question: what is the purpose of these changes? Am I missing something, here? I have to know.
- What is the point of adding the pop-up emoji box? To encourage people to use reactions more; as if people aren't /choosing/ to not use them, but instead do not know they exist?
No one's going to use reactions in private chats, so it's rather pointless there. I guess it would make some sense for a server's MOTD or News channels, but then you guys limit how many unique reactions can be added to a message, meaning the pop-up is completely irrelevant, as after a handful have been added, you can only +1 on existing reactions, anyway...
- Highlighting messages on mouse-over; was this meant to make messages easier to focus on and read?
I don't understand the design hypothesis - if "the contrast of non-moused-over messages is not as good as the new moused-over ones", then why not change the colour palette entirely, rather than just individual messages, which also require user input to view? And if that's not the case, then clearly the new colours are decidedly inferior to the default theme, so again I have to ask; why? This seems more of a because we can kind of thing, not because it's meant to actually do anything for the user.
- Removal of the line break serves only to free up space on screen. There is plenty of cosmetic, 'wasted' space in the UI design, but you chose to begin with something that served a function?
Don't start making changes that nobody wants nor needs, just because you can; I currently use Discord as my primary platform for interacting with my gaming friends, and that only happened after Steam made stupid changes to their own chat platform. I can just as easily set Discord to not run at launch, as well. You're not in a position of such power exclusivity that you can afford to hoof off large portions your userbase without repercussions; basically, you aren't Google.

The line dividers being removed is what I really hate about this update. I thought the Light Theme disaster was the last time Discord would make sweeping changes to the UI that nobody wanted - apparently not.

I don't necessarily dislike the highlighting, but the hover stuff only seems intrusive and unnecessary. The previous idea worked, it worked well and it didn't look very 'kiddy' or so to speak. It was also easy to understand, so I don't see why it has been dumbed down like that. We're not that stupid, are we?
Anyway, I'm mostly commenting because I'd really love to see that message line break back! I noticed something was off this morning. Discord looked so, so messy and I couldn't figure out why for a while. Reading back felt a little unpleasant and I don't like how the new messages are placed down so very low in the window, under that glaring red 'NEW' line that only goes away on its own terms rather than mine.
Please consider bringing those line breaks back! I'll get used to that hover-hell developers like to put into things, but the line breaks always felt useful to me.

My client hasn't updated thankfully, but I've seen the images and videos people have posted on what the new update looks like and wow, I do not want that at all, why would you remove the spacers and add an annoying cluttery emoji menu?
The highlighting thing too, I looked at a 5 second gif someone made showing it off and it hurt my eyes, I can't imagine using discord in that state, what are you guys doing? the UI was fine.5 -
The funny thing is, had Discord initially worked like this without divider lines, I might have loved this due to coming from IRC. However this is years later after you've grown your software and userbase and frankly now you just have a worse Discord and worse IRC. The changes to the readability and this whole flickering show is just a very poor direction that should be reverted ASAP.
This is the sort of thing you as a designer come up with, feel pleased, and then you let it rest on the sidelines for a week and when you come back to it you realize it was a horrible mistake. Been there done that, but that's why you don't push it out to everyone in a platform that likely has far more relevant feature requests than messing with the absolute main function of the software.
Pushing big changes to the chat experience that you can't toggle on/off in the options is a really bad idea.2 -
