New Desktop UI - Hard to Read and Distracting

You probably already know where I'm going with this.

This update is bad. Like, pretty dang bad.

Compact mode has gathered all messages into one mass of text that makes it quite difficult to read. It looks incredibly cluttered. I suppose the new hover-to-highlight feature was meant to help with it but...

That's not great either. By which I mean it's just as bad as the changes to compact mode. It's very distracting, especially when paired with the suggested reaction pop-up on every message. 

Please revert back to the old UI. From what I can tell, very few users are thrilled with this update at best, and it's not accommodating to disabilities at worst. The UI was fine the way it was and I'm not sure what warranted this change.
