New UI is awful
I don't want to just sit here and complain that it looks horrible and not expand on it. But the lack of lines and extra space separating posts makes the chat look a lot more cluttered. Expanding the pixels between posts in my settings barely helped at all. The shade over the messages when they're hovered over are very distracting. Before when you just had the three dots and reaction option pop up at the side, it was perfectly fine because it was barely noticeable. The only new feature I like is seeing the time when a post was made when it's nested with other messages, but that should also go in the "three dots" feature (maybe at the bottom, not as an extra option but just explicitly saying "0:00").
I usually have difficulty seeing at all, and the previous version of Discord on the dark theme was "cozy" (as it says in the settings, that part aged very well) and very easy on the eyes, the text being light enough on the dark background but subdued enough to where there's no "glow" to it. Now, it's all just a giant blur. The more obvious emoji option, as everyone else has said, is a gigantic eyesore as well.
I guess a funny part about this was that I was on mobile talking about how I've been having a sensory overload episode all day, and then this new UI is the first thing I see when I open my laptop up. Well done, Discord.
As for actual ideas, if your developers happen to be dead set on this new UI, I'd suggest finally adding an accessibility tab to your settings to add lines, increase the spacing more than already provided in the Appearance settings, and removing the god awful emoji tab and highlighting. Maybe some options to darken or lighten the background further along with the text for people with sight issues.
Last recommendation, give your social media people a raise for the week. They're probably drained having countless angry users target them for the UI issues.

Very much agreed. It was a good effort and the new UI does work, but it both looks abysmal, and makes it much much harder to read anything in the chat.
I'd recommend either giving an option to toggle back to how it looked before, or flat out undoing the update. It was great before, and the new appearance just isn't something I want to use.

agreed!! as someone with sensory issues also (and i made a post about this as well) it literally gave me anxiety to look at for too long and made my head spin! i have to use mobile to look at what my friends have sent me and its bumming me out that its so inaccessible now.

The lack of spacing is terrible for me. The way it was before was perfect, but I had to increase the space between message groups to 24px and it still doesn't look good. I miss the lines in between the messages. It's hard to tell when there's a new speaker. Also the new hover thing is really distracting to me, I like the more subtle look it had before. Please undo this update, Discord.

exactly exactly, all of this.
I have autism and sometimes have difficulty reading things, especially when there's stuff distracting me, but the added space between messages sent by the same user but less space between messages as a whole makes everything so cluttered and actually gives me a headache!I miss the old UI... My only ever complaint about the old version was that I wish I could have an even darker background so there could be higher contrast without hurting my eyes and giving me a headache like the light version does. [say having like #121212 for the background on the darkest part or something]
but yeah thank you for this. I've been having a hard time putting my thoughts into words without sounding like a huge asshole because I dislike all these updates so so very much.

There is a spacing option for messages in settings... Have you tried this?
