Request for New Feature: Disabling the Immediate .txt File Conversion + Regarding the Apparent 2,500 Character Limit Deletion Point
The title isn't really accurate- what I want it to say is "Disabling the Immediate .txt File Conversion when You Paste Messages Over 2,000 Characters Into Discord + Regarding the Apparent 2,500 Character Limit Deletion Point" but I imagine that'd be a tad bit too long.
Now, on its own, this isn't a super huge issue. I actually don't mind it, because I'm in the habit of splitting up my large messages to begin with. However, what ends up happening is if my messages get incredibly long (when I'm typing up a story, for example) is that I move to an external site where I can type comfortably without worrying about my message being cut off. If you type more than 2,500 characters in a channel, once you click off that channel, anything past the 2,500 character mark gets deleted, based on my experiences.
When I go to an external site, usually a word/character counting site so I know how to split my messages up, I do that- I split my messages into little 2,000 character or less chunks when I'm done with them. However, these sites aren't always accurate, and when I go to paste something I think is around 1,990 characters into the chat, it immediately pops up as a .txt file. This is... annoying, to say the least, because then I need to go back to the site to try to split it up further instead of being able to do it right there in the text bar.
What I propose is an ability to turn off instant file conversion, and instead add this file conversion ONLY when you try to SEND a message larger than 2,000 characters. If you're trying to send a message that's larger than 2,000 characters, then by all means, go ahead and offer me the ability to turn it into a .txt file! But I would like the ability to review my message on Discord before any of that takes place. Allow me to paste the message into the text bar even if it's over 2,000 characters and THEN give me the option to turn it into a .txt file when I send it. This would be more than convenient., as now, it's currently quite a hindrance to me.
I don't see how changing this feature would mess things up, but maybe if you're trying to paste something larger than, say, 6,000 characters it gives you that option. Maybe less. I don't know how delicate Discord's internal servers are, but my logic is that they should be able to handle holding a long message in the text bar while I split it up, right? It could certainly handle a message I was typing once for over half an hour that ended up going over 6,000 characters above the character limit. What a shock it was to me when I clicked off the channel and saw that everything past the 2,500 character mark had been deleted. I clicked back onto the channel after checking a notification somewhere else only for everything past the little "-500" point in the bottom right corner having been obliterated. What's the point in that? Just keep it there! Let me split it up myself! That was over 40 minutes of work I lost because I wasn't given any warning it would be deleted. If Discord truly can't handle such long messages even existing in its text bars, unsent, then please stop letting me type outright after 2,500 characters so I don't lose almost an hour of work :(
In conclusion, you should be allowed to split up your messages yourself, without worrying your long messages will be deleted or you won't be able to paste things back into Discord without it being turned into a file.
