I understand the reasoning behind wanting this, but I personally don't support the suggestion. To me, it feels a lot like a privacy issue, and I don't like how Skype does it.

Maybe they read it by accident, or clicked into the channel/chat by accident, and didn't even actually read it. Maybe they read it but don't want to reply. Maybe they read it and fell asleep and now you're stressed worrying that they're ignoring you. Maybe they left their Discord accidentally in that area and so it looks like they read it, but they didn't really. Maybe they're up later than they should be, but they're keeping up on the chat while doing other things and don't want people knowing they're awake. Maybe they want to read it but pretend they haven't seen it for some reason. Maybe they don't want to feel pressured to reply after the other person knows, without a doubt, that the message was read. Maybe they're friends with a person who would harass them endlessly if they knew the person had read the message and not replied. This would also be useless in large servers, because there would be so very many people reading/scrolling past messages that you'd never find if a specific person had seen it.

It would also put more strain on Discord to record even more data as it's functioning, and take up more processing power, for a completely unnecessary feature.

So I do understand the desire for this. I really do. It'd be nice to know sometimes. But I can't support the suggestion at all due to the many reasons I listed above. It seems like a privacy issue and potentially an extra way of harassing someone.

But it’s also a norm for many other Apps. Plus, there could also be an option for you to disable it. Then, you wouldn’t have it at all. And you don’t need it in large servers. This would be a great feature in my Group Chat; or my server with only certain people in it.

I don't like this feature and its a reason I prefer Discord over Skype or FB Messenger. Its a privacy issue and honestly some people just don't want to contribute to a conversation or they don't want to get involved. When you can see that they saw it it causes a lot of mistrust and judging when they aren't saying anything. The fact that some large servers can have the option turned on is actually even worse, that is still violating the users privacy and their option to ignore that feature.
