change unread marker to highlight channels/servers with notifications enabled
For clarity: by "unread marker" i mean the little white dot on the left, and by "@mention marker" i mean the big red dot in the bottom right
Problem:
- someone posts message in a channel where i have notifications turned on
- i hear the new message sound
- i don't see the pop up notification because I'm in a full-screen game
- i tab out of my game
- by the time i have tabbed out the pop up is gone
- i have no way of knowing where it came from because it wasn't a @mention so i don't have the red marker
- the unread marker doesn't help me because it also shows up for unreads in channels where i don't have notifications on
every time this happens i have to manually search through all channels for which i have notifications enabled to find the one where a new message was posted, not to mention that this also requires me to memorize for which channels I enabled notifications in the first place, which is hard when you have 50+ servers
Use-case example:
Staff channels. when you moderate a big server with 10k+ users you don't always want to read every single message in every single channel (it's pretty much impossible to do so), much less get notifications for everything. But you do want to keep up with everything that happens in the staff channels in real time.
Possible workarounds:
-
turn on notifications for everything, mute channels you don't want to hear
This solves the unread marker being shown everywhere, but the problem with this one is that this would also mute @mentions (at least the sound). as a moderator you don't want to get audible notifications for every single message in #general, but you do want to hear @mentions so you can react ASAP when someone posts gore or whatever. Also, this solution is very annoying to set up. -
use @mention markers instead
This would require every moderator to ping the whole staff team in every single message in the staff channels, which would be super annoying. Also it's not an option when you want to listen to a read-only channel (e.g. giveaway channels usually don't ping and that's beyond your control). Further more, you'd loose the ability to distinguish. while you do want to stay up-to-date with staff channels, it's not as urgent as responding to pings from the users
Suggested solution:
Change the unread marker to only show for places where i have notifications enabled. Alternatively (as suggested by "A Chonky Derg") use color coding by making unread markers for channels without notifications gray instead of white.
Right now this marker is pretty useless especially on public servers with thousands of users because it's simply ALWAYS there since new messages are posted every few seconds, 24/7

If only channels with notification turned on show unread markers, wouldn't it basically work like a reverse mute feature? Any other channel who don't have notifications turned on would be treated like a muted channel: You won't get notifications and you won't see that there are messages.
A simple workaround to that would be by using color coding. To put it simply: unread channels with notifications on now have green dots instead of gray. That way, you can differ between the "important" channels and the "not so important" ones.
Muted unread channels have no dot;
Unmuted unread channels have grey dots;
Unread channels with notifications on have green dots.The color can vary, of course.

It's not the same as muting, since muting also makes @mentions silent, which I don't want.
Your color coding idea is pretty good though, I added it to the OP2 -
This! More servers I join, more troubling this is! Yes, I've got white markings to see unread messages, but they also on sevrers/channels I just don't want to mute(just want to see what there was new messages since last time cheked like it is now). White markers serve different purpose.This was brought up many times before, but no changes... Just make some blue(maybe) dot like the red one, just for channels with notifications on in case there is just some posts without mention. It would be pretty good soulution.

Yeah, Discord keeps showing visual notification (unread dot) even if you change your notifications settings to "Mentions Only", which is a real pain in the ass. Hope they change that someday.

Please add this feature. I want to get notified for every mention but also have most of the servers muted.
Having the unread marker show up on servers which are set to "Only @mentions" and thus also show the red dot in the taskbar make is pretty much useless when you're in many servers with lots of messages.

I just decided to become more active on discord today, and I have to say this was the first thing I seareched for after marking all the servers I'm on as read. I really don't need new message markers from every channel I haven't set to notify on all messages. It only serves to obscure when things happen in places I care about. Please do something about this.

Seconding exactly what @timo said.
