Disable "Reduced Motion" separately from computer settings
Discord has this new(?) thing where it doesn't allow users to enable automatic playback of GIFs or animated emotes if they have Reduced Motion enabled. The two options for this are to sync with computer's settings or Reduced Motion. The problem with this is it requires me to enable "Animate controls and elements inside windows" in the Windows performance options in order to disable it. That flag enables things in other unrelated windows like the smooth scrolling I dislike. I don't want to enable smooth scrolling and other animations to see animated emotes without highlighting them.

I knew I couldn't be the only one irritated by this.
I don't like Windows animations! They're slow and ugly, I just want my animated emotes. ;~;26 -
Please allow a manual override. Just because I don't want Windows animations doesn't mean I don't want to play GIFs in Discord.

I can't overstate how baffled I am by how this isn't a simple on/off switch like everything else. WHY?
26 -
Discord please. Stop making changes that users can't personalize. Why does it have to be like this?
I don't want Animations enabled in my Windows 10. But i do want gifs and animated emotes to play automatically in my Discord. And the only way to do this now is to enable Animations in Windows settings.
You even have the checkboxes in settings (Autoplay gifs/emotes) but it is not allowed to freely enable/disable them now. This doesn't make any sense.

yeah, why does it have to require we enable windows animations just so we can have auto gifs and emotes? this is ridiculous!
16 -
It is total bs.

I just ran in to this issue. I'll be cancelling my nitro until this is resolved. Like others here, I don't like how slow the animations are in windows. I see no point in having nitro when the whole reason I got it was to use animated emojis. I'm not going to scroll over every single emoji/gif to view it, that's just ridiculous.

I agree! There's no reason to lock settings based on our windows configuration, this is a terrible change, very upsetting!
17 -
I thought i was alone in this but nope. Great job discord.
I found a "temp" fix go to control panel > ease of access > make computer easier to see
for windows 711 -
This was the worst thing Discord ever did. please cancel this ASAP.
11 -
Agreed, this update is very "bad" in my opinion. Please revert discord to before when it automatically played GIFs, it's quite annoying.
8 -
I never comment but this is just annoying. Just because I dont want Windows animations doesnt mean I dont want gif autoplay and the rest of the disabled features.
12 -
I agree, they need to add a disable "Reduced motion" button :'(
9 -
Couldn't agree more
This is blasphemy

• Agreed, please fix @Discord.
You updated us with a new feature, that's kinda neat. Though we're now forced to enable Windows animations to enjoy the delicious animated emotes in your client. Windows has slow animations, and by turning them off your clicking experience in explorer is much more responsive. We still love animations, just not from Microsoft!

Such a silly change.
It should be possible to deselect the "Sync with computer" checkbox or remove the syncing option entirely, because it's really unnecessary. The animation options in Windows are entirely different to whether a user wants anitmated content in a 3rd party application. It would be similar to a game becoming a slideshow if animations in Windows settings are disabled.. makes no sense.

This is absolutely moronic and whoever decided this should be a feature should be put in a closet. There's absolutely no good reason for it, and it should be reverted. What the **** Discord.
4 -
There are legitimate reasons, but the implementation of it is just pretty poor.
First of all, there should be an option in Discord to turn this off manually, not relying on stupid system settings.Secondly, there should be more customization about what animations you want and don't want, and if you want autoplaying GIFs and Emojis or not. Having only an option to have Reduced Motion or not is not very customizable.
Thirdly, why fade in and fade out animations? I would want no animations at all tbh. But I do want autoplaying GIFs and Emojis.

To @Discord: Dear whoever it is who decided to change something that didn't need fixing, er hm, reduced motion, er hm,
do you even use windows 7? Do you know how much the animated elements slow down workflow? I use discord on a business level. Please do not force me to not be able to view my multi-emoji gifs or I will cancel nitro. The entire reason why I am using nitro is to post them animated emotes. Seriously, whoever thought this idea was good and whoever did the Quality Assurance, both that idiot and the QA department should be fired. Thankyou for reading my post.
Sincerely, a disgruntled discord user who thinks discord team is becoming the next google or microsoft always pushing out fixes on already perfect services.

Bruh first time i ever comment. I get that the reduced motion is helpful for some people, but why on earth would you not have a disable button, that's so stupid. I ain't gonna turn on windows animations for this and I'm not buying nitro again until a disable button gets added.
4 -
Yeah this should be customisable. For me and a lot of others there is absolutely no link between "having slow animations in windows" and "seeing animated gifs in discord automatically"

I just updated Discord on my PC and I'm faced with this nonsense. Who in the world decided it was a good idea to tie a core feature that has been active for a long time without issues to Windows settings out of the sudden? I didn't pay for Nitro so an update would screw over functionality I paid for like this. Ridiculous.

Yess!! They added the option manually enable/disable it when sync with computer is off (in Appearance in settings). Thank you for fixing this, discord staff!

Thank you Discord staff for making this change!

Finally discord added a fix, all you need to do is go to the discord settings > appearance > untick 'sync with computer' then you will be allowed to disable reduced motion setting.

They fixed it ^~^

I logged into this page just so that I could like the post and all of your comments (and I consider this an irritating inconvenience). This honestly made me furious. I don't know what else sync with computer affects, if anything, but thanks to all of you who shared this fix. I was wondering what broken garbage was causing gifs to not play, what a weiiiird thing. When I saw the untouchable motion setting, like, loool, what~ I don't know anyone out there who turns their laggy Windows features off because of any reason that's related to viewing gifs. 🙄

We did boys, Disable Reduced Motion is no more
