UGHHHH Nothing is working for me! I have read most of the comments from here and nope does not work. I did the "%appdata%" yes it let me delete the Discord folder. But when I try "%localappdata%" it does not let me delete the Discord folder. I checked task manager, it does NOT have Discord running. I have already uninstalled Discord, I also have no Discord.exe on my pc. I have everything up to date with the Updates from the "Windows security and updates". Plus, I do not have Lockdown Browser installed on my pc. It keeps telling me that I can not delete the Discord file and it says the following:

"This action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program.

Close the folder or file and try again"

    Any help? I am so frustrated right now ;-;

Squeeky your method worked for me! I think Discord's recent updates from the 15 - 17 corrupted some files! Hopefully they know and fix this!

I'm facing the same problem as AdoreAmore; if anyone has a solution, please help, because there's now 58.7 MB of Discord but not stuck on my laptop.

I had the same issue, I found this page and followed the instructions and was able to delete discord from my files. Here is the link https://thinkmobiles.com/blog/how-to-uninstall-discord/

Squeeky, my background processes are there, but I cannot tell if the task ended or not.

Edit: I figured it out and it worked!

I was haveing the same issue as RegentCoin where I couldn't even uninstall because I couldn't find it - I had to open task manager (CTL + ALT + DEL), expand for more options, and then shutdown the background processes for discord.  Then I went into the control panel to uninstall the app from "Apps" and once I did that it said it couldn't find it and offered me remove it from the list.  I said yes, then I tried to reinstall from the discord website and it immediately was able to open discord without any problems - so now i'm back!

Glad I've helped, Ninja-sama and everyone else!

imart004, that is pretty much what I did, it seems to have been the fix for a lot of people but not everyone.

But after 7 months, you would hope that Discord would fix their uninstall to stop stray background discord processes first.

i cant install discord on my computer when i try it says its open in another file so i open my task manager and it has nothing inside to do with discord but the file says its still open in another file so what i do is i make sure my task manager is empty then i do it again but i have the same problem. so what i did was to try go into the file that it is open in and when i do it says file not found and none of the comments ive found worked also whenever i restart my computer it always says a javascript error occured in the main process and it tells me a bunch of files and one of those is the same discord file that i cant delete someone help me pls

FakeIntelligence, you say "I make sure my task manager is empty" but my task manager is never empty. It makes me wonder if you have clicked the "More details" button to see Background processes, which is where I found the leftover Discord processes. Also those processes were there each time I restarted my computer, until I clicked End task on them and reinstalled.

FakeIntelligence, that gave me a good laugh :) Solutions often seem obvious in hindsight!

I didn't delete any files, after I ended the stray processes I went to Apps and Features (right-click the Start menu), clicked on Discord and clicked Uninstall. Then downloaded the latest installer and ran it.

I realise other people are having problems with the appdata files, but hopefully the Uninstall will clean those up, once they are no longer being locked by the stray processes.

I can't handle this situation anymore, Discord gave me the "Update.exe" errore, I uninstalled, deleted appdata folder, both roaming and local, restarted, but nothing still. Still the same "Update.exe" error. T_T

Squeeky Thanks, shutting down all the processes allowed me to reinstall it. It works, for now. We will see after next update. How the heck can this be happening? And why the heck is this not really a program- cannot choose location, is NOT in the program files but in the appdata/local folder. But still has uninstaller. Is it mobile app crammed into pc? If I would not know better I would think that it is some suspicious program that will ruin my hard disk. Or worse...

i'll tell you guys what worked for me. so i did windows+r ->%appdata% ->discord  delete and if you cant take ownership then click on the file and delete everything inside. it let me delete everything inside and then u can delete the discord file after deleting everything inside. then just reinstall as usual.

    Hello everyone,

    I've fixed mine.

    1. windows key and r

    2. type %appdata% and delete discords app data

    3. windows key and r again.

    4. type %localappdata%

    5. open task manager and end all of discords running tasks.

    6. delete discord in local app data.

    7 download discord!

I uninstalled discord. I was able to delete discord folder from localappdata but I cannot delete discord folder from AppData. It doesn't show any error. It just wont delete. I cannot install it again. I cannot see any open tasks in task manager. Anyone faced similar issues?

I solved this, but forgot to comment about it.

As other people are saying, discord is no more, even in appdata, but the program won't launch anyhow.

I actually googled this a lot, and found a solution, based on the fact that another program, Atom, was giving me that exact issue with Update.exe

It appears that the framework used by both Discord and Atom, squirrel, was the issue, so what I did to solve this was rolling back to a previous Windows Framework Update, and then reupdating.

Hope this comes useful for someone!

Squeeky Thanks so much! That fixed the problem for me! Task Manager showed 5 Discord processes running so I shut down each one.. Then I opened the setup file for Discord in File Explorer and it started right up as normal.

thank you Matt, that fixed everything. i noticed you had the open task manager instruction (i didnt see that when i read it) anyway i thought i would go further into detail for the task manager, because it doesn't show with just running task manager initial pop up screen. then was able to follow the steps you had. thank you!

so if it gives you an error that its still running go into

    task manager->more details->click details tab->find discord->right click on discord->end task

    then follow Matt's instructions of

To delete the application data, open the Run dialog box by pressing the Windows key and the R key together.

Type %AppData% and hit the enter key.

Locate the folder Discord and delete it.

Open the Run dialog box again and type %LocalAppData%.

Locate the folder Discord and delete it.

    solved / solucionado

Change the appdata folder name of discord if you cant delete it.
Cambiar el nombre de la carpeta appdata si no pueden borrarlo.

    Then install again .
    Luego instalen de nuevo.
