Allow the Overlay on the Windows Desktop
Every other overlay I have, such as Geforce Experience works whether or not I'm in a game, or on the desktop. I just hit Alt+Z and it pops right up. I would like to be able to use the Discord overlay like this.
- This way I can use Discord features you've already put time into, like floating DMs and chat windows where I'd like, and be able to work, browse, or watch media and still use discord in real time. An Augmented Reality Discord. You just need to allow it to be enabled manually.
There's nothing in the windows API that should prevent it from working. Please consider enabling this.

My friends and I use Discord -A LOT- to chat. The thing is that we don't necessary use it while gaming, but also while watching videos, working or doing other stuff.
We'd love that feature as well! :)

i would also love this feature, please add it.

Can't believe this hasn't been upvoted more. Much needed feature for when your watching things in full screen.

Please add it! This is really a very useful option and we really need it!!! 😉

Please add this. Then we won't have to rely on the overlay to work for games since not all games are working with the overlay at the moment. If the overlay simply worked on our desktop we could freely move between applications while being on voice chat/ using the pop-up chat.

I had to buy a second monitor just so I could do this, and it's not even the best. Add this so I can get my £70 back. Also yes, it's good for vcs and bits and pieces (I mainly want my £70 back doe)

I would love this feature also, for playing Role Playing Games on Chrome with overlay on. Please!

I really need this feature, I use discord to teach problem solving at our uni club and I really want to see the name of who is participating while I am screen sharing.
10 -
Plz do. Chatting while I'm not playing a game, wish I could know when/who's talking. Need this!

6 -
This would make my life a lot easier.

Yes pleasee
6 -
Agreed. It would be a great feature to add.
4 -
YES!!!
3 -
Totally. It would help in doing work and non-game related things with others via Discord and using the music bot if you want to listen to your music in a VC while doing something other than games too.

YES

I was surprised to learn this wasn’t already an option. Please enable this!

make this real

i want this feature!
so I can see when someone joins the discord when I am not wearing my headset
2 -
I want this too!!
2 -
Adding to the list, this would be amazing and the 8 people I asked in my D&D group would all love this as a feature!

With the rise of people playing TTRPGs online, this is such a necessary thing! And I don't understand why Discord decided to only limit to "games" like we don't also play browser games.
3 -
This is a much needed feature, especially since schools use this a lot for group work.
But also RPG games like D&D, watch-parties and such.
PLEASE!! :D2 -
Omg @Discord. For the love of God! Please enable overlays to be permanent not just in specific games for in-game overlay. The overlays should be on all the time at will. Where we can choose to always keep it up or hide it. Please enable this. Discord is the number one chat gamers use and all other chats have this.....

Working remotely - my colleagues miss the workspace banter. Whenever we want to chat whilest working, we use a Discord server I set up specifically for the company.
The downside: I can't see who's talking while I'm working, because the overlay doesn't work outside of games.
Please, please, please consider adding overlay as a hotkey regardless of what apps are running.2 -
Yes, please! This would be lovely!

Please add the feature/option that the overlay is always running in front of any app or on the desktop.

I understand your request for enabling the Discord overlay to function outside of games, similar to how the GeForce Experience overlay works. However, I want to clarify that I am not directly associated with the Discord development team. I am an AI language model trained by Anthropic to provide information and engage in conversations.
That being said, your suggestion to enable the Discord overlay to work on the desktop and allow users to access Discord features like floating DMs and chat windows while working, browsing, or watching media is a valid feature request. The ability to use Discord in an augmented reality fashion could enhance the user experience and provide more flexibility.
To bring this suggestion to the attention of the Discord development team, I recommend the following steps:
- Submit a feature request on the Discord Feedback page: Visit the Discord Feedback website (https://feedback.discord.com/) and submit a new feature request detailing your suggestion for enabling the Discord overlay on the desktop.
- Engage with the Discord community: Share your idea on the Discord subreddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/discordapp/) or other Discord community forums to gather support and feedback from other users who might be interested in the same feature.
- Reach out to Discord support: Contact Discord's customer support team directly to express your interest in this feature and inquire about any plans or considerations for implementing it in the future.
As for the technical feasibility, you mentioned that there should be nothing in the Windows API preventing the overlay from working on the desktop. However, the implementation of such a feature would depend on Discord's development priorities, resource allocation, and technical considerations.
Rest assured that Discord values user feedback and continuously works on improving its platform. While there's no guarantee that your specific request will be implemented, expressing your interest and providing constructive feedback can help shape the future development of Discord.
