Notification Cooldown because repeated bloops rapidly drain my sanity thanks
I would love to see an additional notification setting added for the desktop version. Currently, if notifications are becoming too numerous, users can mute notifications temporarily via timer, or until notifications are toggled back on. Alternatively, a user can change to do not disturb and silence all notifications. In many situations, one of these options (or another I may have neglected to mention) is sufficient to solve any issues users might have, but there is one glaring problem with all of these functions. That is, they must all be manually toggled on. I feel that there is a simple, easy, and effective solution in the form of a "Notification Cooldown" setting, which I will now describe.
Simply put, provide users with a setting that can be applied app-wide or on a user-by-user (or server-by-server) basis, that performs the following functions when any text message is received that would normally cause a notification to occur, with accompanying sound:
First, the notification and sound will play normally, and a timer will start (timer configurable by user).
For the duration of the timer, or until the user looks at and "clears" the notification, no more notifications or sounds will show up from the source of the first notification.
When the timer finishes, or when the user looks at the notification, another notification would then be allowed.
For example:
User 1 has this feature in effect app-wide, and sets the timer to one minute between pings.
- User 1 receives message from User 2. Notification plays.
- 10 seconds from first message, User 2 sends another message to User 1 that would normally trigger a notification to play. However, as this is within the duration of User 1's set timer, no notification plays.
- 30 seconds from first message, User 1 receives message from User 3. Notification plays.
- 40 seconds from first message, User 3 sends another message to User 1. It has only been ten seconds since the first message from User 3, so no notification plays.
- 65 seconds from first message, User 3 sends another message to User 1. Though User 2's notification "cooldown" has finished, User 3's "cooldown" still has 25 seconds remaining, and no notification plays.
- 70 seconds from first message, User 2 sends another message to User 1. As it has been more than one minute from the first message from User 2, the notification plays for User 1.
- 75 seconds from first message, User 1 looks at message from User 3, then tabs away.
- 80 seconds from first message, User 3 sends another message to User 1. Despite the fact that User 3's timer has not finished, User 1 has looked at the message and "cleared" the notification, so another notification plays.
Why?
I feel that this feature would add a great degree of benefit to users, and would generally improve the experience of using Discord. I am sure I am not the only one to have been annoyed by repeated "Ping" sounds while working on something, caused by a single user sending multiple messages in quick succession. Sure, I could mute the notifications from said user for 15 minutes, but that requires both interrupting what I'm otherwise doing, and would probably cause me to miss future notifications from that person. In essence, that solution is reactionary. The proposed setting, however, would preempt this issue, as it would only need one activation in advance, and would then automate the process of muting notifications, without risk of missing notifications for too long.

I agree completely. The boops are killing me.

I came to this forum to write out this exact same idea, lucky me, saving me time. Hope they see this.

I could swear that this feature used to exist, at least in the mobile apps, but it got removed for some reason.
Edit: Found it. From this page:
Push notifications are smarter. You will now only receive a max of three notifications when a channel, server, or group DM begins talking because you really don’t need to hear Blake and Mikey talk about high performance cars for an hour (you’ll still get any @mentions thrown your way). This resets after ten minutes of no one talking or if you come back online.0 -
I cannot up-vote this hard enough to convey the gravity of the need. Seriously, this needs to be added asap because I'm tired of having to mute channels when I'm doing something else and two people are having a constant back and forth conversation.
