Privacy
Hello Discord,
A while back I posted some feedback about privacy concerns; this question was purposely dodged. I'm going to ask again: why do you need one's phone number for protecting accounts when just an email is perfectly viable?
It's blatant that you are doing this to collect more data on users (to sell), as well as tiptoeing your way around COPPA by not allowing under 13s on the site (knowing full well that a lot of under 13s use the site and most reports go unanswered) instead of actually reconsidering the way your company collects data. A lot of people buy your premium services, so there is no need to collect data like this. I would consider buying Nitro if you and your company actually took privacy seriously.
Thank you,
p0p

For most of the time, Discord won't ask you for a phone number, but for security reasons if you create your account using a VPN or it detects something suspicious, it will ask you for a phone number
1. When it asks you for your phone number, it's used for security reasons, like for example, to keep IP banned users off the site
2. People can always use fake email websites to create fake emails
Adding more privacy can lessen the security while adding more security and lessen the privacy0 -
As someone who has never logged into Discord (or any other social media) with their phone, this is an annoying and invasive demand. It would be nice if an alternative were used.
