One time purchase Permanent Server Boosts
From what I understand our purchase of server boosts is only a temporary buff to the server. If we cancel the boosting sub, that server loses their boost and their boosted level goes down and they lose the benefits of having been boosted. If I am correct, then I suggest Discord implements an option to buy a permanent 1 time boost x however many boosts a person wants for the server of their choice to get their boost levels. If that server dies, the permanent boosts will just die with it. As it is a permanent boost to that server, people can not cancel it or transfer it to whatever new server they like better. I don't like the idea if I boost my server 11x in one month, I will be charged each month 11 boosts to keep doing this for that server plus my nitro sub. If I want to boost a server, I just want to make my choice one time to help them out in achieving their goals so they get the perks and I want them to be able to keep that perk as I paid for it already.I think as long as the server is paying for their own Nitro sub, that should be more than adequate to keep any boosts donated to their server. And if money is an issue: Give them an option pay the cheaper sub (like ours for $9.99/mo) to have boosts only until the user cancels their boosts, and an option make server owners pay a little more like $14.99/mo monthly sub so they can keep all nitro boosts permanently that get donated to the server.

If you won't answer my question, then I'll just assume you can't.

How many people already mentioned that with the potential of permanent server boosting, Discord would still get money from nitro subscribers? I think that as a nitro subscriber, you should get at least ONE permanent boost THE FIRST TIME you get nitro. And from there it would be nice to have the option to purchase a permanent server boost, as well as have the option to buy a temporary one. This way Discord would likely gain more income from users buying more permanent ones to help support multiple communities. They wouldn't lose money going this way because, SURPRISE, you can PAY for the permanent boost and I don't know about you but last I checked, if you pay for something that means MONEY for the seller.
10 -
That is the most ridiculous thing I’ve heard so far. Pay once boosts might help Discord make money, but not in the long run. They will make less money than if they were to keep their monthly subscription system. Please think this through. Help Discord out. Doesn’t matter if your not wealthy enough to get monthly boosts, just think about this logically from the companies view.
Discord would still make money from their nitro subscribers, but that isn’t ENOUGH. They need all of the money they can get. Monthly subscriptions allow them to PAY THEIR EMPLOYEES. smh
-5 -
Mouse it's pretty easy to see how else Discord makes money outside of server boosting. They make money through game sales, cosmetics such as emoji packs, stickers, custom rank cards, etc.) and merchandise. There are plenty other ways for Discord to sustain itself. It's the naysayers that are a problem here by thinking the company can't make money any other way other than Nitro subscriptions and server boosting.
Fact is Discord can sustain themselves and more in the long run if they made boosting permanent until the Nitro subscription is ceased. When that subscription ceases then fine, take away the levels, but Nitro is a recursive payment they will always get. So, this is long term revenue and more especially when people will not want to lose their boost levels. As a server owner myself, I would be more inclined to dish out the fees to max boost and start buying some customizations, but because Discord chooses to paywall it all with persistent boosting to maintain levels beyond level 1, By pay walling leveling, they are actually doing harm because it discourages people from buying cosmetics, merchandise, and more. I am not inclined to spend anything more in Discord because it's simply unacceptable bad business the way things are modelled right now.7 -
Honestly, I feel like they should allow permanent boosts to a certain extent so they can still make money, but small communities can still have SOME perks. For example: The first 2 boosts for the server are permanent, but the rest will expire over time.
10 -
The fact is the current set up discourages people from boosting servers. Ive had a nitro account for years, and boost the server I run for my friends with my "free" ones. But once I realized the boosts were temporary I stopped paying attention to it. A lot of the white knights in this thread don't seem to understand what they're talking about. A could care less about their "business" as a consumer, I care about the product. Its their job to worry about the business side of it. That's supply and demand 101.
I have a small but active discord of about 30ish people, mostly real life friends that get together to game. But no one really cares about nitro or the perks it gives, we can just link to google docs or youtube if its something higher sized. I pay for it because I post stuff to the server a lot for the group so it works for me. But no one else is going to pay to consistently boost the server. So there is zero additional money that they are going to make from my server other than what I pay for my nitro sub.
But, I would gladly pay some kind of flat yearly rate (within reason) to boost up the server to whatever level. I'm sure I'm not alone with that. There should be some permanent effects, like custom urls and such if you really want to pay for that, but overall I would be fine with a reasonable yearly sub to maintain the server perks. You could even scale the cost by amount of members. 0-50, 50-150, 150-300, etc. There are many other options that could yield positive revenue besides solely relying on boosts which many servers just aren't ever going to get. And we could all benefit as a result. The current system is just poor decision making, and as many have pointed out, the advertising seems intentionally deceptive.

Honestly in my opinion, you are all correct but if we were to make it so discord would make money and so the people would have permanent boosts is that the first 2 boosts are permanent and the other 45 are not i think that this is the best course of action that discord should take.
3 -
Honestly, having the first 2 being permanent and the rest temporary would lead to more confusion and more of this argument. Example, "You TOLD us that our two boosts would be permanent, so why aren't the rest?" "Its another misleading scam, we were supposed to read the terms and conditions" stuff like that.
To avoid another one of these it would be best to make one boost permanent and the other temporary, I think someone else said the same thing a bit before. Less room for error and a sufficient compromise between those who say discord needs the money, and those who want the boosts.

It's so flustrating to see that the only people who agree with this are the ones who can't afford it themselves and only care about themselves instead of Discord...

It's so flustrating to see that the only people who agree with this are the ones who can't afford it themselves and only care about themselves instead of Discord...
If you don't understand then you aren't trying to understand. All you see is your narrow sighted bubble view of what's right or not. People aren't thinking of just themselves. They are thinking about Discord and its consumers. It's not that people can't afford to pay for it. What's going on is people refuse to pay for the service perks when the rewards are so small contrasted against the expenses for those perks. If you really believe that Discord is not making good money already hand over fist, you had better start studying the the Discord business model you are so religiously defending. Start doing some math. Start with 10,000 people who only purchase Discord Nitro and pay for Level 2 boost perks per month. Then start adding up all the games sales Discord makes plus don't forget to add all the sales of Discord merchandise and the fees for cosmetics. Another thing to consider is to start looking at how much it cost other countries around the world besides the USA.
Sorry, but you are the one who's not understanding any of this. If you actually did understand what people are getting at, talking about and why, you would probably be less vocal and condescending, stereotyping people with a label of poverty. So mature of you - not.
Start doing some math of cost to perk ratio. Discord is heavily favouring of profit moreover consumer friendliness and fairness. Dare we even mention all the Discord backer corporations who fund Discord too?
You think this is frustrating for you? Imagine how we all think of your opinion that is not consumer friendly at all. Now Microsoft wants to buy Discord. Imagine how that makes us all feel on top of you being OK with Discord scalping its customers for minimalistic features.
Do the math. You will see exactly why people are opting out from Discord server boosting. Cancelled my Nitro yesterday and dropped our levels. Many are doing the same.
You want to side with Discord that's fine, but don't be ignorant of the truth and reality especially when I can post proof to you just how much Discord actually makes. I'll let you do the math, but if you insist I will prove some maths for you just to prove to you that people are not unwilling to pay because of poverty as you so labelled everyone.
Also, I invite you to prove me wrong.

Totally agree with you Borg, but you just stated an analysis of the problem. What do you propose as a solution? Keep it the same, permanent boosts, mix of both?

bruh whats the point of having temporary server benefits? the point of nitro is personal benefits, and it makes sense that they remain temporary, but server boosts expiring is just a money grab to have people who want a cool server on the hook for nitro.
1 -
I think you individuals are as a rule way overdramatic. It was right away clear to me that it would just keep going for the term of your nitro. Anyway I unquestionably might want to see some sort of longer enduring or lasting advantages. Regardless of whether you get 2 months of your worker being supported rather than only 1, that would be much cooler. Stop with the limit capital letters and hashtags when its since you can't peruse or do a smidgen of examination before you go through cash.

This idea is a great idea to add to discord but from what I realized right now, discord staff don't give a shit about these comments, do they?

maybe I sound mad, but discord is never gonna do this, simply because they are not gonna make enough money with it
like how Victoly said it, u all getting mad about something that is just the same as Netflix
pls don't spam the community with the knowledge of knowing that it's not gonna work

Agreed... would love a one time purchase for a permanent boost vs paying monthly for it or at the very least let you just outright buy a perk you want for your server with a one time purchase vs relying on a community to boosts the server. It makes more sense for the company to guarantee the server is max boosted with their own bucks - especially if they want the vanity URL. What good is it for the regular person that joined your discord server to boost since they really dont benefit from it?
3 -
Discord would make less money in the long run if they implement permanent server boosts, so there is no way they will implement them.
-2 -
@Egg inc.
How would they not be making money? Discord makes money with cosmetics, game sales, merchandise and is also financially backed by several major corporations. Don't try to feed us this nonsense that Discord will not make any money because Discord is making money hand over fist even without server boost payments. The keep server boost, people would still be paying Nitro fees to keep those levels. Stop perpetuating fictitious notions. It's helping nobody.3 -
How about making Boosts a single use item, and servers would lose a number of boosts every month based on its level?
-1 -
I would like to say that I do agree with the statement.
Boosts are temporary, it would be a waste of someone's life and the whole server if you are charged 12 times a year just for Nitro Boosts. This is the main problem about Discord Nitro's Boosts.
Argument 1:
I suggest somehow maybe a feature to keep Level 1 or Level 2 or both permanent after it's unlocked with Level 3 being just an upgrade to both levels. This way smaller servers don't get charged monthly and it allows smaller servers to grow faster.
Argument 2:
Most of the features in Level 1 and Level 2 are pretty tame, getting a server background is a simple task and most platforms have this feature, and changing the background is very minor and there's no point charging someone to upload a picture.
I see no absolute problem in changing backgrounds. Like what's the point?
3 -
A compromise to at least try to hold your Discord Boost up for now without getting charged would be
- Try using Salad, it's a CPU/GPU miner where you can mine Salad cryptocurrency and purchase gift codes and cards. It's painstaking effort but if you save up at least enough you can buy Discord Nitro for just $9.99 (not real money, it's mined cryptocurrency) on the Salad store.
*If your CPU or GPU ain't up to the task, you can switch to another type of mining or Salad will automatically (if you allow it) download backup miners. It's safe and I've been starting to use Salad for around 3 days now after some thorough research and reading.
Right now, this is the only quick and no-charge compromise I can think of. If there's another way that is even faster or more efficient (without scams) then continue this.

I have seen a lot of comments and i didn't realize people can be so greedy. Discord doesn't sell our data like facebook. If discord sold data for money they would be as rich facebook(There is no ads mind you).
Every single bit of data (that's your texts and files you upload) are saved in some hard drive out there in discord data center. They don't come free now do they? Plus discord is expanding, It will only expand with time. Understand that they are a huge company with actual employees maintaining/building the platform.
They can only make money through nitro and boosts. Its a great monetization system in my opinion. If you want to pay you can get perks. If you don't want to pay you don't get any perks but overall the server you get won't be that bad as some people are saying.
If i hear your greedy consumers story sobbing in the name of having "small" communities why would discord part on profit because of you guys. Companies need to make profit understand that. That's what a company is suppose to do make money. They need to make as much money as possible to make their company better and make sure its stable now and in the future.
Not to mention all the loopholes something like permanent boost will create.Even if permanent boost existed what defines "permanent". Lifetime? Until that server exists? Until discord as a company exists? It will be instant money for discord but later they will start getting short on money since surprise surprise they don't get money anymore. Everyone bought permanent servers boost so now no one pays for boosts again. LOSSES.
What price tag will you put on a permanent boost. I guess to make a permanent boost make partially sense. (not to mention all the possible loopholes and problem it will create)I guess it would 999.9$ ? Considering it would be one time purchase that will last for life or something . It would look real fancy in an application that's free, Spend 999.9$ for permanent boost on discord!!!What a deal bravo!! Literally no one will use discord and it would be really controversial.
-A big wall of text by some stupid 15 y old on the internet. You are welcome to hate on me all you want .
-2 -
Explain who exactly is being greedy? Level 1 and 2 are lame perks. Level 3 not so much. Where is the problem with have a perm level 3 one time purchase and where is your logic of $1k.? I think it is you and them that are the greedy ones.
2 boosts are just part of what makes Nitro a good thing. Do you really think everybody will drop their nitro sub after buying perm boosts? There are plenty of other cosmetic perks that would make a person want to keep a 10/month account active.
Another non greedy and yet realistic way to get the level a company wants
Package 1
Level 1 Server Perks - with current pricing 10/month fair but suppose for your greedy purposes you can add another 5 bucks since this is a targeted audience
Package 2
Level 2 Server - I would argue 30 / month justifies this
Package 3 - 60 a month is more than fair.
Now if we want to talk lifetime.. make it where you if you want to use discord, then perhaps you should do what other software companies do and make it one and done - ie one time purchase of X amount and you own the software. Or perhaps even make those packages above be a one and done purchase. But to think 1000s for the one and done is just ... ridiculous. It's precisely the Vanity URL link in level 3 that is what a lot of people want anyway (or at least I would image since that is what I actually want) so just for the sake of argument, at least make that perk a quick 100 bucks or something and you own that link forever.

I guess the last two people who commented didn't read.
Discord makes money with cosmetics, game sales, merchandise and is also financially backed by several major corporations (including Tencent). Don't try to feed us this nonsense that Discord will not make any money without these big boost prices because Discord is making money hand over fist without server boost payments let alone with them. If people didn't have to recursively pay for server boost, people would still be paying Nitro fees to keep those levels and they would be more inclined to continue paying Nitro for however long their server is alive. In many cases servers will be around for years and years making discord money via Nitro throughout the whole time the server is alive. Stop perpetuating fictitious notions that this boost model is fair because it's not and most people who aren't overflowing with cash would understand this. Usually the people that have more money than brains are the ones who are defending Discord's actions and business model. All Discord is doing, is pushing business away that would make them more money in the long run. But that greed has to come before need. Anything different wouldn't be Discord. I mean look at the definition of the word 'discord'. It means disagreement between people - lack of harmony between notes sounding together. Take a look at the business model and what it's doing to the community. Try tell me greed hasn't disrupted and segregated the community. Go ahead, try.2 -
So I have two points and one thought:
I do care for Discord, since I use it for nearly everything. However, I still agree with those people who agree that having permanent server boosts would be beneficial. Although, a single permanent boost per Nitro user may be the best option. When you think about it, that one permanent boost wouldn't do much, so you'd naturally still need two people to pay for that permanent level 1 boost. That means two people are potentially buying Nitro, rather than just one person who buys the permanent and the temporary (potentially less profit there, understand?). Again, I state (for the dumb ones) two Nitro users rather than one.
Second, it is true that the wording for the Discord Nitro is a bit deceptive. The most coherent description they provide on the Discord app says "Get 2 server boosts and 30% off extra boosts". Since Nitro is monthly, you can't help but think that the 2 given boosts are also monthly. It doesn't state anywhere on the Discord app that those two free boosts aren't monthly. You could potentially argue that it doesn't say it's not monthly, but that's where the confusion starts.
I'd buy Discord Nitro for a month if it gave even a single permanent server boost, because it feels like you're supporting your server; Discord; and, by extension, yourself. However, because it's a monthly pay (and therefore multiplicative), it makes me not want to pay anything. This may have been stated elsewhere, but if Discord gave a single permanent boost to each new Nitro subscriber, MANY more people would be more inclined to pay that $5. You may even have more people willing to pay the monthly fee to REMAIN Nitro subscribers.
TL;DR, if each new Nitro user got a single free permanent server boost, more people would be inclined to throw the $5 at Discord. You'd also have more people possibly become monthly Nitro subscribers because they got something permanent out of it.
1 -
To everyone going "oh but discord needs to earn money somehow", how about one permanent boost per person who is subscribed every 1-3 months, depending on how often they want it?
Discord earned $130 million in 2020, and they "need to make money"?
1 -
To those who advocate permanent server boosts, if they were to make it a choice along side the current system, I'd imagine they'd charge more for a permanent boost... How much more should they charge? 150% the temporary boost price? 200%?
Considering I personally don't really care about server boosting, I currently have no standing on permanent server boosts.
-1 -
> Discord earned $130 million in 2020, and they "need to make money"?
No they don't need. They just want to.
It's a company, in the real world. That's what companies do. Don't expect a 'gift' lol.Monthly revenue is the more desirable and sustainable model a company can expect.
One-time purshase won't happen.Price per month is even optimised for the maximum income possible. 4.99, 7.99...
Reads more like 5 and 8. If they could drive it up and not loosing subscriptions they would.Or what amount should it be ?
The equivalent of a year ? Ten years ? What's the average price that would not represent a loss for the company ? One can easily pay once and keep a server forever. Just rename it and change members when it gets irrelevant. How to account for inflation ?Well.
-1 -
I agree that the advertising for the boosts is very misleading. I'm in Canada and it states:
"You have premium benefits, 2x boosts, and a boost discount for $12.99/month"
It's the "$12.99/month". That slash represents the word per as in per month, as in $12.99 per month. So one would assume that the stating is two times boosts per month included in that $12.99. but that's not the case. When you sign up with Nitro for the very first time you get two permanent boosts that's it. As long as the server is up and running. At least that is how it worked with me. I've had Nitro for a little while now and I got two boosts and I used them in my own server. Now you have to pay a monthly fee but you only get the boost for a week? What kind of BS is that.
I for some reason had two boosts and I was like what the heck is going on? So I selected my server and I boosted it but it expires in 7 days. So I'm like this is kind of stupid. It's absolute BS. If I have to pay monthly for a boost with a Nitro membership, you better bet that I get those boosts to use wherever I please per month. And as long as I have my Nitro membership those boosts stay active. Meaning if I pay $12.99 a month I should be getting either one or two boosts included with that. And then I use those boosts in whatever server I want. So if I want to boost my server I boost my server and not boost is active for the month that I use it in. 30 days. Whatever. At the end of that they expire. And then when my next month of membership for Nitro comes in I have another two boosts that I can use whenever I want wherever I want. So if I want to boost my own server again I can but it still stays at the same level because the previous boosts expired. Do you understand what I'm saying? But I might want to boost somebody else's server for a short bit. Who knows.
If Discord wants to make money that's not a bad way to do it. Because not enough people have nitro. But enough people want to boost their server. So include two Boots every month that expire at the end of each month to boost whichever server you want. It's as simple as that.

A lot of the people in this forum don't seem to understand how a business works. They don't need money. And giving the ability to buy a one-time permanent server boost wouldn't make them less money anyways, as after scrolling through this forum it's very obvious that 3 or 4x as many people would be buying server boosts if they were one-time payments. Like it's ten bucks a month for two boosts, but it could just be like $50 for a permanent one. As someone who uses more than one discord server, I don't think it's very user-friendly to make someone pay monthly for basic things like backgrounds, threads not locking after a day, etc. Every other social media that has those settings has them for free. Discord, again, does not need profits. Not as much as they need customer satisfaction, anyway.
