Edit Messages With Spoiler Showing Original Message
Let me start by saying that I know this is a controversial topic among the community, and people are concerned about the abuse that can come from features like being able to edit other peoples messages, and no one wants to have their freedom of speech to be impeded on. I also agree that a lot of individuals reasons for wanting a feature like that is all for the wrong reasons, and would ultimately result in exactly what a lot of people don't want.
I implore everyone to take the time to read over my suggestion before making a quick judgement and just screaming "NO!" without actually knowing what is being said, as I don't think this is going to be quite what you think.
What I am suggesting is NOT just a way to edit other peoples messages, but rather a way to help the administrative staff display the correct information when needed.
Let me give an example:
On my discord we have a channel to post redeemable items, so if you buy a humble bundle and it comes with codes you're never going to redeem, you can share what items you have available with the rest of the community. Sounds fun right? But lets say someone speaks up before everyone else to claim a code but the person offering it has given you permission to edit their post and scratch out the game so that when they get on later they don't have to deal with a bunch of different people trying to claim a code that is already claimed, and ultimately be disappointed? Well, currently this isn't possible.
Now for my proposal:
What I suggest is that we have a toggle-able feature that allows the user to consent and give permissions to the admins/mods to edit their messages, with the ability to at any time, to turn this feature off so that no one can edit their messages, I also suggest using a "spoiler" button at the bottom of the edited message (Just like how it says the message has been edited), it can say something like "Edited by: (Name of Admin) - (Role)" and when you click on the "spoiler" it extends the message to displays the full unedited version of the message the user typed up before you modified it.
Also, make it so that you're only able to see if someones messages are able to be edited, if you your self have the permissions to edit their messages, as it would only apply to them anyway, and you could even give the permissions to either anyone who has a role with the "administrator" toggle ON, or simply choose which individuals are granted permissions to your messages.
This way, any "abuse" would be visible to everyone, and if you don't like how someone is editing your messages, then just turn the option OFF.
I feel that this is a very viable way to compromise between the people who are afraid of abuse, and the ones who want this feature.
TL;DR
Well look, if you're not willing to read the post in the first place, then you really have no business voting on things anyway. That's like signing a contract but having no idea what it says.
If you really don't want to read the whole thing, just please read my proposal. I put it into paragraphs so it was easier to take in, anyway.
