Let users truly delete their data on discord, which protects minors and abuse victims
Hey Discord team,
I love using Discord, and I know a lot of people do - it’s an amazing place for communities, friends, and creative spaces. That said, there’s one thing that really worries me: account deletion.
Right now, when someone deletes their account, Discord removes the username and profile picture, but everything else stays - all messages, images, and conversations. Even worse, once the account is “deleted,” users can no longer remove that content themselves. For minors or anyone who’s shared personal information, that can be really unsafe.
It feels counterintuitive - “deleting” your account should actually mean deleting your data, right? That’s what people expect, and it’s what keeps users safe and in control.
Here’s what I’d love to see:
Full Data Deletion: When an account is deleted, all messages, images, and personal content are permanently removed.
Apply Retroactively: Data from accounts that are already “Deleted Users” should also be fully erased.
This isn’t just about technical cleanup, it’s about trust and safety. Implementing this would make Discord a safer platform for everyone, especially minors and vulnerable users, and reinforce the confidence users have in the platform. I've heard very disturbing stories about people deleting their accounts to protect against their abusers, only for their abusers to now have even more of a power imbalance over them as they can't even delete their messages now.
Thanks for listening!
