Why in the name of God do I need to double click to post a file?

I've come to say the exact same thing. Why this is a new "feature" is beyond me. It just gets in the way in every single way.

If the "issue" it was trying to solve was accidentally clicking the button, that would be something I'd much rather see done with the much more common and much more awkward accidental voice calls. Wandering through your friends' DMs gives you a bunch of opportunities to accidentally make a call (especially in mobile) leading to awkward situations for all involved.

Exactly! There are plenty of buttons that I do accidentally click on that I don't want to click on- out of literally every button on Discord, I've never accidentally pressed the file upload button. The file upload button is, without hyperbole, the single button I click the most when I use discord. It may seem trivial, but I just cannot even begin to fathom the reasoning that anyone would even need this as a feature. Even if, for whatever reason, someone did have the problem of accidentally hitting the file upload button, do you know what the way to correct it is? By clicking the X on the file browser. In other words, the solution to someone accidentally hitting the file upload button and having to click twice, was to make it so that you have to click the button twice every time. If there's some other reason why this change was made, I'd at least like to know, because it is a complete and utter mystery to me.

But it isn't. If Discord detects a compatible activity like listening to Spotify, it'll also show up here.

( Also, bots may be supported in the future )

Okay, that does explain a fair bit. That being said, that functionality is both fairly niche, and completely unclear to someone who doesn't use external programs with Discord. This is a fine feature, but it shouldn't be combined with the general file uploading feature. You could easily combine the growing list of other links on the right side of the text box- the Nitro, Tenor, Sticker, and Emoji buttons- into a list like this. In fact, I would actually find that to be useful, both to avoid accidentally clicking on those buttons, and to consolidate what is starting to take up an excessive amount of space on the text box.

You can't go wrong with options!

Let users decide whether they want an instand single click upload button or if they want a multi-feature upload button. Would be great if we could switch it on and off anytime.
