Video Chat and Message at the same time

I'm on a Google Pixel 4 and I seem to be running into an issue when i video chat with my friend. i can't seem to be able to send messages to them and have the video call up at the same time. i keep having to switch between the DM and Video Call. this is really annoying and i wanted to check to see if there was something i was missing.

  There’s nothing that you’re missing as far as I’m aware. I believe that the developers haven’t added a feature yet, where we could message in a chat box within a call. This would be a great suggestion for the developers to take into consideration as it would make it easier for everyone facing the same problem.
