I'm sure that the banking system also contributes massively to the climate crisis. But I don't think supporting an alternative which is also massively harmful is the right thing. We can either a) work to make the banking system not terrible, or b) switch to a not terrible alternative.

Crypto is far better for the environment than the banking system and since we need a financial system for the world to function, you need to pick one. So unless you have a more brilliant idea than crypto, which obviously you don't, you need to pick the better solution.

i guess i’ll just say this here but it is really strange to me that these people assume that by condemning crypto stuff we support the way other financial institutions are run. which like…. no. i’m a straight up communist and if i could snap my fingers and get rid of all of this shit i would. but changing old financial insitutions will take time and work, and we may be able to stave off this new wave of garbage in the meantime

@prethor ok but like, they both use the same fuel source. a server farm mining bitcoin is plugged into an electrical grid like anything else. there are a lot of ideas on improving how money is handled that have nothing to do with crypto. one is getting rid of private banking and instead running a centralized public bank through the postal service. another would be putting caps on wealth accumulation and getting rid of the stock market. and by the way, assuming banking is inherently opposed to crypto is strange.

at the end of the day, both are tools to be used by people who are already wealthy at the expense of regular people, including you prethor. why not put your energy into trying to change how money itself is accumulated by people who will never use it.

Meanwhile banks don't care what energy they use nor do they even try to become more ecologically friendly. And you're picking banks over crypto.

Greenwashing is a real issue that is now insanely prevalent in capitalism, even from fossil fuel companies. Nobody is saying banking is better. Crypto and nfts are not the solution for what is wrong with our financial system, they are adding fuel to the fire. environmental impacts aren’t the only issue with crypto stuff. crypto is literally just another form of money storage but it doesn’t actually change anything. the same wealth disparities, energy consumption, and instabilities exist, alongside issues unique to crypto

anyway i’m done arguing. i have done a lot of research into nft’s and have come to my own conclusion, and i can assume that most of the people here have done their own individual research. i’m not trying to win any arguments. prethor, on some level i do understand why crypto is appealing to people. it does feel like an outsider solution to a genuinely corrupt and problematic system. however, please read up on people who have helped get the ball rolling on crypto. powerful people, people who have deep ties to finance. this is all the same stuff. and none of this belongs on discord
