Issues with Discord entering the crypto/NFT market
With the soft announcement that Discord is looking to enter the cryptocurrency/NFT market, I have cancelled my Nitro subscription. Until Discord makes the announcement that they do not intend, now or in the future, to hop on the crypto/NFT bandwagon, you will not continue to see any financial support from me.
The computation work involved in the blockchain process wastes a tremendous amount of energy, accelerating us toward the climate change deadline ever faster. Even outside of the energy usage, the physical tax on the computing components means that the hardware involved will burnout and get added to landfills at a much higher rate than regular usage. This is terrible for the environment, and something that makes our precarious position in the battle against climate change substantially worse.
Also, crypto, by its design, attracts scammers and money launderers. There are articles on a fairly regular basis of a cryptocurrency entering the market, having a huge buy-in, only to have the makers cut and run with the money. NFTs have been shown to be minted, pass between various wallets to drive up the "price", transferred back to the original owner, and then sold off to a mark at a crazy price.
If this is truly what you want your company to be associated with then when you finally pursue that path I will be finding a different VoIP client to use.
