"Pause" insinuates a "resume"
I hate to be the "next guy" in this situation, as clearly there's plenty of topics relating to the userbase concerns of Discord implementing crypto wallet support, but after much thought I've decided I wanted to lay down my two cents, too. I was about to renew my nitro this week, but I simply can't.
Discord boasts being one of the largest modern networking platforms for people of all demographics and interests to gather on. Discord is a place for artists, MMO gamers, programmers, car enthusiasts, history buffs, film fanatics - everyone uses Discord. Why, then, would Discord appeal to a single, niche demographic of its userbase by implementing crypto compatibility, that being the cryptobros?
What happens when some hapless loser gets his BTC stolen, realizes it can't be tracked and returned and the thief can't be prosecuted, and then turns to blame Discord for it? Are you ready for those legal ramifications?
What happens when someone creates an NFT out of illegal content? Are you going to prosecute the users who boast links proving they own it? When it's tied to their Discord account, who's going to get in trouble? The NFT owner? The NFT minter? The host of the blockchain? Discord?
For a platform that is consistently bombarded with hacks, scams, frauds, and other cybersecurity concerns, you sure are ready to bust out the big guns. I don't know about other people, but I grew up with a father, a cybersecurity worker, who was adamant about teaching his kids about how fickle and fragile the internet and its workings can be. Why in the world anyone would authorize their Discord account with a crypto platform is absolutely beyond me. Are you ready for the responsibility of handling people's money and property outside of Nitro subscriptions?
If you do want to associate yourselves with NFTs, why not advocate for a more environmentally sustainable blockchain, cryptocurrency, or NFT market, such as Voice, EOS, or Cardano? Why are you wanting to collaborate specifically with one of the most energy-insufficient blockchain technologies, Ethereum?
It's clear that Discord is riding on the crypto and NFT scene simply to appear bigger than it really is. You don't care about the future of crypto, you care about the publicity and the $$ you might rake in from this niche of elites you're trying to appeal to. Do better and give it up.
