Discord as a platform for multiplatform
Hello!
I have a feature request/proposal. I like to play various indie-games, like Deep Rock Galactic, on my Xbox, but most of my friends are on the Playstation side. And we can't play together, because the developers do not have the resources to build a whole new platform, like battle.net, origin, etc.
So I thought, "Wouldn't it be cool, if small developer companies had access to such a platform through convenient SDKs?" Such a platform, in my opinion, should have several properties:
- Social networking: friends, online status, messaging, etc.
- Voice chat. Crucial for online gaming.
- Little work to embed into any game. Easy to use SDK and API is a must. With good deprecation policies.
As a monetizing strategy, I suggest to use a subscription model. To play using Discord "my-cool-new-service" players have to be enrolled in subscription.
And, in my opinion, Discord is the best base for such a platform, because it already has two of the three properties: social features and god-tier voice chat.
Let me give you an example of how I think it should work.
- Developer implements support for Discord "my-cool-new-service".
- User subscribes
- User links its Xbox/PS account to discord account.
- User enters the game, auto-logins to Discord.
- User creates a party through discord with his/her friends.
- Party plays multiplatform session. (this point might be challenging, I don't know the nuances of online gaming).
So what do you think? Is it possible? What are the caveats?
