Option to allow DMs only from those on friends list.
There seriously needs to be an option to only allow DMs from users that appear in your friends list an no one else.
This adds a layer or protection and privacy but limiting the amount of spam one receives.
Currently, there is only a toggle to "Allow direct messages from server members". When on, anyone that is a server member can DM you. When turned off, anyone using discord can DM you. This just isn't enough and more options for DMs need to be created.

Agreed!

Absolutely! It wouldn't be an issue if people only joined tiny discord servers where everyone knows everyone, but that just isn't the case. For example I'm super active in the Minecraft community. Well with that being the case I'm a member of the official Minecraft discord which has thousands of different members. I'm not interested in random, spam, and other such nonsense just because I'm in that discord. It would be great to have three options.
1.Open - anyone can dm you, no restriction.
2. Server - anyone in a mutual server can dm you.
3. Friends - only your friends are able to dm you.
This would allow everyone to decide what is the best option for them. Super open and willing to be contacted by anyone, moderate restriction with some level of connection, or strict with only people you've chosen to allow to dm you.4 -
This will be good since many people get spammed by people that they don't even know, so it will be good if the dms are changed for only friends

I don't think this'll be a good idea, cause someone could have something pretty serious to message and if I have this setting on, the person can't tell me the issue
Also you can't add bots as friends so there would be a bit of trouble with that
Also friending random people on the internet could be harmful and this setting, where you have to friend to DM ain't really help with that

Gloryissad I get what you are saying about missing a message about something 'serious' but on the other hand, some people have a greater interest in protecting themselves from unsolicited hate, malice and spam. That's just a user choice and every choice has costs and benefits.

Gloryissad As mentioned, it needs to be an option. You may not think it's a good idea, but I'm sure there are many that would think it is good. Furthermore, as an option, it gives you the choice to have such a setting inactive for your account while those that would benefit from this can choose to activate it.

@DomQuantam @Godzara
Ok I just realised you can already make discord do this
You just disable DMS from server members
