Dear discord
Thank you for developing a platform that enables and encourages real community growth and development. Where we can interact with real people and discuss topics we want to talk about without inundating us with targeted marketing and social algorithms. For the first time since the dawn of social media I feel like I am actually able to engage and socialize on the internet again. With that being said there is a huge problem that is causing a lot of damage across the communities I engage in. The problem is scammer bots and unwarranted DMs. I know bots are a problem across the internet and I don’t expect anyone to solve bots and scams. But I think there are simple interface changes you could implement that would drastically improve clarity for users and reduce the success rates of these scams. I think first and foremost DMs should NOT be displayed among the list of servers a user has joined. This leads to major confusion as scammers will intentionally use identical profile photos and names as legitimate servers in order to broadcast misinformation to the community and upon first glance it’s is very easy to mistake it for the real thing. The scams will often link to fake websites where members will attempt to buy products or merchandise but instead have their financial information and assets stolen. This has a real and horrible impact to many users of your platform. Best case scenario is the user recognizes and reports the scam but even best case it’s a huge inconvenience and annoying. As a result most users just turn of DMs altogether. A more practical solution would be to 1. Not display DMs identically to the way servers are displayed and 2. Have DMs deactivated for every user by default until the recipient accepts a DM request by the sender. Hopefully you take the time to read this message and consider implementing these or other creative solutions to address these issues. Either way I still sincerely thank you for what you have achieved and provided for the many users and communities using discord.
Thanks!
