Use standard Apple install/update infrastructure for macOS Discord app
The Discord macOS app fails to behave like any other app i’ve seen on any of my Macs (since 1986) when it comes to how it updates especially.
Most apps put up a standard, familiar informative update window, explaining to the user what is going on and offering options. Here’s one for the macOS version of the cross-platform FTP app Cyberduck:

Discord’s Mac app does none of this: it just goes ahead and tries to update, spinning its icon around. Eventually it may ask for macOS admin privileges without explaining why it requires them. Looks sneaky and nefarious, making me wonder what‘s going on. When i decline to give the Discord app the admin credentials, the update fails. This repeats every time i run the Discord app.
With the standard system, as Cyberduck uses, i know what’s happening. I sign out of my standard user OS account, go to the admin account, and run Cyberduck again, letting it update there. Then i sign back out of that and go back to my standard OS user account and i’m good to go. There are legit security-related reasons why this is more secure in a macOS environment vs. just typing in the admin credentials in a standard user account, which is why i do this extra work.
I want to do the same thing with the Discord macOS app, but it won’t let me.
Please adopt the? one of the? standard Apple software update mechanism(s), which:
- Keep users informed about what is being updated and why admin credentials are needed
- Gives the user the option to update later, or if not that, immediately Quit the Discord app (to switch OS user accounts to admin and run the Discord app and let it update there)
Thank you.
