Improve Visibility of Voice Ring on Mobile Devices
The ring around a profile image on a voice call to indicate speech, at least on my iPhone, is tiny. Even on contrasting backgrounds, I can barely tell who is talking if I don't have the phone right up to my face. But if someone's icon is green, I can't tell when they're speaking at all because of the generated green background. I can only know for sure if someone is talking if they have a dark icon that contains no green (or other colors that contrast with the icon) around the edges.
On desktop, I'm fine, because the ring is large enough that I can just look and see it. But on mobile it might as well be drawn in colored pencil.
This is an accessibility issue on two fronts:
- I have glasses-corrected myopia. If I can't make something out on my phone, a lot of low vision users definitely can't, and the visibility of it on other platforms may be similarly troubling.
- People with auditory processing disorders like myself, and likely many hard-of-hearing people, rely on the visual cue of who's talking to follow the conversation. In the absence of a moving face, a circumstance in which this cue is invisible must not be possible.
Here are my recommendations:
- Have an option to visibly thicken the ring around people speaking in voice calls on a per-platform basis.
- Have an option to change the color of the voice ring to one that will contrast with the generated background.
