(There are other posts about this, but none of them talk about Discords agenda to hide the subscription option for Nitro Classic from its userbase for over a year, BEFORE it went full anti-user and destroyed the option. So I'm gonna cover it.)
In case anyone was unaware, for at least over a year(and most likely longer) if you were to go to the Nitro page, and scroll ALL THE WAY to the bottom... PAST all the bright-colored and flashy "9.99 NITRO!!!" graphics… there stood a "Nitro Classic. 4.99" option, with a grayed-out color scheme, and a very simple description. It always seemed VERY SHADY to me to make this option so hidden and as unappealing as possible in comparison to what was clearly their favorite product-- It was apparent they didn't want their users to select the cheaper option.
A quick google search showed that Nitro Classic was first available in 2017. It was a more affordable, more simple version of the full 9.99 Nitro. I hope I'm incorrect in this assumption, but…It's almost too obvious now, that after the definite growth of Discord’s userbase (especially during the pandemic), they regretted having most of the popular features under a cheaper option. So they hid it. And recently– axed it.
Personally, I am a daily discord user. I use it for communicating with friends, but also professionally for remote-work jobs, making the original Nitro Classic the perfect option:
- -50MB upload limit (more than enough IMO)
- Custom Tag (Custom tag is important, especially when using Discord professionally. Should be a free option.)
- Animated avatars (Animated avi is strictly cosmetic, but appreciated)
- Cross-Server emojis (also cosmetic, but frankly one of the most liked features)
- 1080p 60fps Screenshare (Again, when using discord for something like remote-work, minimum 1080p 30fps is a necessity.)
Now? If you want ANY of these options other than just the 50MB upload or the Cross-Server emojis, you have to pay twice as much as you would before they removed Nitro Classic.
When I lay it all out it, this recent change really does reveal itself as a downgrade for a huge chunk of Discord's userbase.
Bottom Line: Bring Back Nitro Classic. Name it whatever you want, maybe switch Basic to be a more "Cosmetic" option, with all the stickers and banners etc, because there is an audience for those options. But the essentials-- the perks provided in Classic, NEED to be reintroduced in an option that doesn’t have users paying more money monthly than they would for a streaming service.
Adding subscription options shows that you're in-touch with the diversity of your userbase. Removing subscription options? That shows the opposite.
I’m pretty much forced to stop supporting discord entirely until this is changed. Nitro Basic includes almost none of the features I use, and 10-Smackeroos-Nitro is just too much for me financially.
