There is a way to go back, but this forum won't allow me to post instructions.
I have reverted back to a previous version of Discord. I have tried posting detailed instructions on how to do this, but my post continues to say “pending approval,” which leads me to believe that it's not going to get through.
So not only did they force a nearly-unusable trash “update” on us, but they are also keeping us from helping each other undo their mistake.
And I'm not exaggerating when I say “nearly-unusable.” As a disabled user, yes, it was actually unusable for me. My world came crashing down. The entirety of my day yesterday was devoted to learning how to get back to an older version. Discord is my gateway to almost all social interaction in my life, and I use it for things other than social interaction like household organization (and important communication with my spouse), teamwork, language learning, archiving, etc. So, yes, it actually is that important. I threw an entire day away just to deal with this mess. I'm still tired today from the stress of it.
So it is infuriating to think that they won't post my instructions on how to go back. I want to help others get their lives back.
EDIT: I failed to mention that this is for Android. I don't know how things work for iOS.

Managing to get the old UI back is a huge struggle, and I'm happy you managed to get yours back. You should consider, if you haven't already, rating discord one star on the app store. The best way to ensure these UI updates don't get forced on us again, or to ensure that we can ignore the update if we want without sacrificing security to do so, is to force discord to hear us on all fronts. If their app rating goes down fewer and fewer people will be pushed the application, and that will overall hurt discord numbers as that's fewer potential costumers.

Is there a drawback to reverting back to the old UI? (I hate the new UI but if it will put my account at risk I am afraid to revert back) If there isn't, I'd love to know how to. My discord is the same as my name here (anxiousfool) if you're willing to give instructions!

I actually don't know if there are any drawbacks to going back. So far, so good, for me. I went back yesterday.
I will be absolutely distraught if I lose access to Discord, though. I own and manage a couple servers and it's the main way I talk to my spouse, my best friend, and my brother. I have their phone numbers, though, if something happens…
Now I'm about to save a list of friend usernames and server invites somewhere just in case the worst happens…

There's a thread on Reddit for how to go back. I was able to successfully go back to the version prior to the new release.

I would love to know how to do this. I have autism and UI changes are always really hard on me, but this honestly just the most unintuitive bs I've ever seen.

Yeah it involved getting an a-p-k app and getting discord through that. If you can find an old one then that works on its own.
Trying to work around posting filters so language is a little vague.
