New Mobile UI

This going to be long but for short: the new Mobile UI is terrible. I've been seeing it since it started being tested and was dreading its eventual arrival.

And it's here!

And it's worse than I could have possibly imagined!

In my experience, the main appeal of the Discord Mobile app was that it was identical to its desktop counterpart. The “cluttered,” layout may have been an adjustment back in 2017 when I first joined Discord, but I found that it was infinitely superior to Skype and Google Hangouts* (yeesh, I'm that old?) and have been using it since.

The latest blog post claims, "The world has also changed — as more of you spent time using Discord on the go, what was lacking on mobile became more apparent. It was missing standard features that people have come to expect from using other mobile messaging and communication apps…" I've not heard nor seen complaints from current users- however, a certain group of users who became homeless has been making their Exodus across the interwebs in the wake of Twitter being bought and rebranded by Elon Musk. 

It's always been about the money, I guess. This summer, Tumblr recently also rolled out a Dashboard update this year with about as much warning as Discord gave. Guess what it imitates? (Hint hint: They go by X now.)  Multiple users as a result stopped using the site and have begun using extensions/client-side modifications to not deal with the miserable layout.

Discord appears to have only listened to the users who supported their proposed changes and it's obvious they are following to expand their user base- by snubbing the current ones. There have even been rumors of Discord deleting negative reviews, and if those are true, how disgusting that this company has sunken so low to censor opposing views. 

I agree with other users that the latest mobile update should be opt-in, but I'll suggest something even better- make a one-time payment to have the option to toggle to the new update. Because it's always about the money, right?

In any case, if nothing changes, I guess I'll get an older version of mobile or just switch off from Discord entirely. If I do the latter, thanks for ruining a perfectly good platform. See y'all.
