Bring back showing a small slice of the currently active channel on the channels list
Previously, when browsing the channel list, you could still see a small vertical slice of the currently active channel to the right of the screen. This was useful as it served two important functions:
1. Showed you new activity in the channel while browsing the channel list.
2. Enabled you to quickly and easily go back to the channel by simply tapping on it.
In a recent update, this channel preview was removed and now the channels list takes up the full width of the space. This is bad for the following reasons:
1. The user is given the impression they are no longer in a channel, despite the fact that they are
2. Going back to the channel is much harder because the user must browse to the position of the channel, identify the correct channel name in the list, and click on it. This process takes much longer and is much less convenient. It’s uncomfortable.
As I see it, there is no real benefit to removing this feature and it negatively impacts the experience. The extra few characters of channel names that are visible are not worth it.
It is possible to swipe from the right to go back to the channel but this does not give us a preview of its contents and the swipe gesture is slower and less comfortable than a single tap. It also requires disabling the experimental Launchpad feature.
I am frustrated because I advocated for this feature to remain while Discord tested their new mobile UI some months ago. The feature was kept and I felt that Discord had provided a good new experience which took the strengths of both UI versions.
Now this feature has been taken away with no consultation and for no good reason I can see. It is disheartening and gives me the impression Discord do not truly know what they are doing and can not resist messing around. I cannot support actions that do not make sense and worsen the experience.
