There is currently api problems. https://status.discordapp.com
If it continues to not work, check if your overlay settings is the way you want it to be and enable overlay.
If it continues to not work, report the bug in https://discord.gg/discord-testers

This isn't a bug. I was told it simply doesn't work with modded games. Let's all vote this up!

    Discord doesn't auto-detect modded Minecraft
But at the same time it does?

You have to manually add Minecraft via the "add it!" button
But if you restart Minecraft it doesn't auto detect it again
And it doesn't show up in the "add it!"
So you have to remove it from the "ADDED GAMES" list (which is bugged because it doesn't visually show that it got removed)
Then readd it via "add it!" again
Which has to be done every single time you restart Minecraft

Even if the modded version is just Optifine, which only increases client performance

Why does Discord not auto-show games that have already been added to the "ADDES GAMES" list
It matches Minecraft to the game being listed, but doesn't enable the overlay for it

swiftestcat: in previous versions of Minecraft (up to 1.14.4), it worked fine for me even with mods. So, I don't know.

@RedCMD - This is exactly the same issue I am having. I don't use a modified version of Discord. It happens on both of my computers. I've disabled hardware acceleration and my antivirus. I've made sure overlay is turned on. But this behavior persists no matter what modded version of Minecraft I use and I've tried several different clients of Minecraft. It's extremely annoying to have to readd it every time I launch the game. It's been over 7 months and I don't see any progress on this issue. Everyone else I have talked to about this has the same issue.

Regular, unmodded Minecraft works fine, but I do not use unmodded Minecraft. There are many people who use modded Minecraft. And obviously Discord is detecting that the game is running because you can't readd it unless you delete the of the game from game status (which says that it isn't running even though it is).

I wonder if it's the result of the asterisk in the window title Minecraft adds when modded, and Discord not handling the wildcard character correctly when searching for the window title string?

The only solution i have found works only for the game status (you cant stream the game). It is basically to go to the minecraft launcher, then going to settings and make the launcher stay opened while you play. And then you just add Minecraft Launcher as the game you are playing. You can change the name from minecraft launcher to minecraft in the overlay settings.

As strudo was saying I was wondering if it was the window title so I tried with a vanilla install and a fabric install with the debrand mod. Both windows had the exact same title "Minecraft 1.16.3" and according to discord's game activity page both entries are the same javaw.exe yet vanilla minecraft is listed as "Minecraft" but with fabric+debrand it is listed as "Minecraft 1.16.3" and had to be added manually. (and removed before readding the next time)

Either there is a space at the end even with debrand or Discord is using another way to detect the game?

I just add Minecraft (with Optifine) to the list, so I can have multiple Minecrafts with the same javaw.exe, but it only says one is open. It also calls itself "Multiplayer (3rd party server)" , probably because i'm playing on my server.

    Miner the Miner
The fact it is called "Multiplayer (3rd party server)" is nothing to do with the mods. It does that in vanilla.

Discord just for some reason doesn't like modded clients.(I typically use Fabric with MiniHud, Tweakaroo, Malilib and Litematica as well as Optifine with Optifabric.) It is annoying because if you are using QOL(Quality of Life) mods you are just making small tweaks and you still want people to know you are playing minecraft.

    PLEASE CHANGE THIS DISCORD!

Let's just be realistic about this, discord doesn't give a f*ck about this and probably will not fix this.

I think I fixed it. I'm using Optifine and it doesn't appear in the "Add it!

What I did is turn on "Keep the launcher open while games are running" then close it. After that, go to the "Add it!" section then add "Minecraft Launcher". Simply just change the name of "Minecraft Launcher" to "Minecraft" then it will show Minecraft with the Minecraft logo on your custom status, and you will be able to Live Minecraft.

Uhh, if someone is reading this and still haves this problem let me tell you that i just went to the "Add it!", added Minecraft* 1.16.5 then changed the name to Minecraft and it shows up automatically as Minecraft now.

(you can use any modded version like "Minecraft* 1.12.2" or whatever name shows up and it will work i suppose.)

    There is an workaround:

    https://github.com/sp614x/optifine/issues/5351

When you follow these steps, you can get the rich presence and the overlay working for optifine.

If the overlay is not working in Minecraft with mods and it's not detecting game activity, the issue could be related to compatibility between the mods and the overlay software (like Discord or other in-game overlays). Many overlays require specific permissions or proper configuration to work with modded games, and mods can sometimes interfere with these settings.
