Annoying unread channel icon won't go away

Hi, back when you right clicked on a server and went to server notification settings and a pop up came up, and when you muted a server from there, everything was fine, but when they made it a submenu of the server settings it seemed to stop working. When I changed the settings to show nothing and suppress @everyone and @roll mentions I would still get the little icon saying that I have an unread channel so I had to fix that by muting every server and that worked for a bit, but now even with every server muted, took away all of their notification permissions AND made sure that every channel was read, even left a lot of servers I still get that icon saying that I have unread messages. Its really annoying because I can't even see if a friend messages me because all I see is the red dot above the icon. Is my account bugged or is this a common thing that is happening and how can I fix this?
