My Hacked Account Journey
On August 18th 2024 an old friend of mine messaged me on discord asking me if I could try out him and his buddy have been working on for their “college project”. Me knowing this dude was around college aged and everything, and being a good buddy from awhile ago I obliged. He sent me the files, I downloaded them, and he got access to all my saved google passwords.
Yep, I realized that I seriously was that stupid to do something as idiotic as fall for such a stereotypical scam. He kept messaging me on discord calling me an idiot and basically blackmailing me for $450 otherwise he would sell the information, along with screenshots to all the accounts and passwords associated with them. After not responding to him and quickly trying to change my password for my account I noticed I wasn't able to block him, or remove him from my friends list, next thing I noticed was that I automatically got logged out. I quickly ran a security scan on my computer then system restored to when I turned my computer on that day, then ran a malware scan after doing a bit of research to find out what it might've been.
The “hacker” sent me an email basically threatening to blackmail me again. I went in to try and recover my discord account, but of course he had changed the email associated with the account. First thing I did was go through all +80 account that were part of my google password manager and changed all the passwords and added 2FA if I could. I froze my credit cards, and had done a credit freeze the previous day because of the SSN breach that happened recently.
Since then I have become insanely depressed and disappointed in myself for doing something soo stupid. I sent a ticket with a different email the day of the hack and was told to send a ticket with the email associated with the discord account that was hacked. So far I have only been responded with two automated messaged. I also have desperately DM'd discord_support on twitter with only one response telling me to resend/reopen my ticket with the email associated to the hacked discord account.

On the day that my account was compromised the hacker quickly went to work and started to message people on my friends list the same scam and tactic, they messaged me on other platforms asking what was going on. I embarrassingly had to tell them that I fell for a stupid scam. Thankfully most of them know me pretty well and know that I wouldn't ask them something stupid like download a completely random file from me.
I will keep this post updated as I get responses with timestamps and whatnot so that others who have been hacked can maybe get some of their questions answer on through this post. I really wish that with all the research and other posts I have been seeing, discord can find ways to prevent this so that stupid people like myself don't fall into the same trap.
Update: August 20th 2024
I got the heavenly message from support that my discord was reverted to the original email and to reset my account's password. I did that and alot more, not going to bore you with the details.
I'm truly amazed at the response time I received and want to personally thank Ezio and the entire discord support team for responding to my ticket soo fast and help me regain access to my discord account. I know alot of people are not soo lucky with the response time but I also understand that the amount of tickets they receive on a daily basis and have to shift through is alot. I'm glad that discord has a dedicated support team of actual human beings who help those in need.
Unfortunately while the hacker had access to my account he messaged alot of people. Unfortunately two of my friends also fell for the same scam I did, and now I can't help but blame myself for them and anyone the hacker also scammed using their accounts. It feels really shitty, and after talking with discord support afterwards I unfortunately cannot do anything on my end. My two friends would need to submits tickets on their own behalf, and I have no other platforms to communicate with them.
Please use my stupidity as a learning lesson on what you shouldn't do if a friends you haven't messaged in years asks “what you doing? u got 5 minutes”. Please spread awareness on this.
Again, thank you to Ezio and the entire support team at discord.

Did you receive an email saying that, your email has been changed?. Or did you even put that on the ticket as if you received it ( Yes/No ).

Abdulazizs9099 No, I got not email whenever the “hacker" changed the email. It just happened. Kind of dumb they send the email change notification to the new email they register it to, and not the old one to potential revert it.
Hold out hope guys, make sure to put in as much detail in the ticket, screenshots, emails, account name, etc. The more detail the better. I attached a screenshot of the email the hacker sent, blackmailing me, two pictures my irl friends took of him messaging them and trying to pull the same trick. A screenshot of the email I get whenever I try to change the password which shows the name of a different account now attached to it at the time. Basically the more detail the better.
I would suggest making another ticket and adding that level of detail to the ticket to potentially get a quicker response If you ticket has been up for 4 months. I also reached out to the Discord Support Twitter to get some of my questions answered, and maybe definitely not grovel for help.
As someone in customer service its hard to help someone when all you give them is “my account hacked, help”.
