Visual language on new UI elements is needlessly confusing
So, I just saw the new UI, and while there are many things I find grating, much of it is mostly a matter of getting used to. There are, however, two problems I wish to draw explicit attention to, because they are things one *can't* get used to, as they are communicating fundamentally wrong ideas by their visual language.
First, and the smaller one: The new top bar is part of the *server*, but the current implementation, with the server selector not going past it, makes said server selector subordinate to the server you are currently on, which *should* be the other way around. Worse, it has the same colour as the server selector background, which makes it look and feel like the same element - until one of your server icons gets cut in half for no reason. A much better spot for it would be where the client currently shows notifications, clearly delineated as part of the server, not a second, unnecessary title bar (If it is to be kept *at all*, because right now it is just an unnecessary doubling up on showing the server name - right above where it shows the server name).
Secondly, and *much* more importantly - the new call controls. Why, in the name of all that is good, is that now a hovering element? That makes it look like a separate window, which one should be able to move (or close/minimise). It is not. The visual language is the *exact same* as the stream widget, which *is* movable. If you wanted to make the call controls their own section independent of the server section, that would be fine in that position, even with the width - but make it an actual section! Not a hovering element! As is, it feels unclean, and draws extreme amounts of attention (because it looks like there is a *random window in the foreground*), all while communicating that it is some thing, which it just *isn't* (namely, being movable). Alternatively, actually let me move the thing - because then it communicates what it *actually is*, rather than being clutter.
This is an accessibility issue. Every time I look at Discord, I have to actively stop myself from accidentally disconnection from my calls.
