Discord has an in-game ovarlay. ingame overlay display messager over game. over lay does not display messages in VR.

 

Steam show messages in VR

Discord would be awesome if Messages in vr was thing

  But doesn't this only work for Steam games/programs?

  You are right! one of the most appealing features is the in-game overlay, that allows usto see Discord messages while we're playing a game. However, this feature doesn't work in VR. This is problematic for two reasons. First, it means that VR users can't take advantage of Discord's in-game overlay feature. Second, and more importantly, it means that VR users can't see Discord messages while they're playing a game. This is a major issue for VR gamers who rely on Discord for communication with their teammates.
  
  Fortunately, there is a solution: Discord can add support for displaying messages in VR. This would be a simple matter of adding a few lines of code to the Discord client. Doing so would make Discord an essential tool for VR gamers and greatly improve the Discord experience for everyone. Reverb
