Special characters showing as boxes on mobile

I have the latest Android version on my Moto phone with Android 7.1.1 and when names and server channels have special characters they show as boxes. My older Moto phone with latest Discord app on Android 5.1 shows them fine. I don't recall doing anything special to the older phone, so why can't I see them on my newer phone? Newer phone is XT1609 Moto G Play, and older phone is XT1528 Moto E (2nd gen).
