Legit, I don't know when I signed up for a Google Voice account but the last reference I was able to find of it in my email was back in 2010. I'm staring down the barrel of (conservatively) a decade of Google Voice being my primary number so I was quite surprised when I got the message below from Discord when trying to enable two-factor.

I understand it's technically a VoIP number/service, but that being said - it IS Google.....I've had zero issues with using my number as a two-factor backup on a plethora of sites and services I have accounts on (ie: my personal banking account).

Could a dev/engineer maybe chime in right quick and please explain why GitHub is cool with having a Google Voice number as a two-factor backup but Discord isn't?

    Thanks in advance.

In the same boat as the OP.  My Gvoice number is THE number for me.  cell carriers come and go, cell phones are disposable but the usefulness of the single number is immeasurable.

I'm in the same boat. It seems to me some developer went to the lengths of actually checking the number, but the reason is unclear. Why is this so? I use my GV number for 2FA on almost every service, including banking. Discord, please don't be like the companies that don't care and just want to mine user data...

I'm agreeing with all of this because I prefer to use my GV number for 2FA as well. I use it for backup for most 2FA and it's a more consistent number for me as I may occasionally change numbers physically and forget about the 2FA settings otherwise.
