Takes too much data to connect

I've been on a limited data plan with my phone company and discord used to be the app that could provide great access to voice calls and texting even when my data was up. Updates and maybe a high influx of users affected the quality for calls and texting. I didn't mind too much calls being annoyingly unstable and randomly muting the other party's sound, forcing me to reconnect. However, what bothers me most is that it has gotten to the point I can't even use this app to text properly with my friends and this is the only app we use for that. The issue is that it has gotten slow, there are connection issues, apparently, so bad that I can't see the other party responding to me unless I close the app and open it again each time. It's definitely not an issue with my phone company because other apps seems to work fine, the updates on discord seem to be the bigger problem for me. It's getting progressively worse. How much data does it take to send a message through discord? Even images don't send. It's kind of pathetic, man. I didn't even mind that because I know I don't know unlimited data, but not even being able to text? That's a low. I'm not gonna be able to use this app anymore and that's sad.
