Suggestion: Blocking people from changing nicknames
Having your nickname changed in a server by someone without your permission is pretty annoying. I get this a lot and have even asked the people doing it to stop. Though at the end, it was done to be funny and I had my laughs with it, but there's the times where it's straight up annoying.
I think discord should add a feature where the user can turn off whether they are okay with their nickname being changed or not. Those who are admins/mods/owner(s) on a server have the privilege to changes nicknames of others. Like I said, it's annoying sometimes. Adding this feature could really help those who hate their nickname being changed.
For others, it may not be a big deal because it's simply a name being changed, but there's people who feel different about it. Anyway, I hope a feature or a similar feature is brought into their future updates.

Seconded. There really needs to be a user setting "Prevent Server Admins from Changing my Nickname."
And no, "just leave servers where there are malicious admins rofl" is not a helpful piece of advice. There's quite a few servers you have mixed feelings about, where there's moderately abusive troll admins who will kick users around basically baiting them to lash out and bait a ban, but who do not actually have the authority to unilaterally ban a user, and these servers are unfortunately often subject matter servers rather than private community servers.
Saying "just leave the server" is not viable when it's the largest unofficial Discord community for a franchise you like. I had to actually leave one and basically cut ties with the community for a video game I quite liked because a server admin had it in for me and found fault with whatever I did. Some server owners won't risk pissing off a long-standing admin even if that admin is abusing their authority, but otherwise don't want to get involved in a fray unless it becomes a banning issue.
That's the kind of admin that a user setting would stop.

Could Discord stop server owners and admins from being able to change your nickname? It’s super annoying. Good thing that the server owner that I have stopped when I asked them to but I don’t know if they intend on stopping for good. I just would really like it to be an option to stop that from happening. Since it’s my nickname, no one else should be able to change it except for me. Unless I want someone to change it. Which, personally I don’t get why anyone would want their nickname to be changed by someone else but I guess that’s just me.

I want to second this suggestion. My son is being bullied by the server admins by changing his name constantly. Honestly I find it baffling that someone has the power to change the name you chose for yourself, this is just plain wrong.

Yes, this really should be a thing. There is someone changing our nicknames in a server and they are changing it to inappropriate things and we are trying to fix the problem but it would have been so much easier to have this.

This is a terrible idea and its nonsense to suggest you should have rights on a server that doesn't belong to you. I run a Discord server which not only costs money but moderation is part of the running a good server and I'm not going to let just anyone join with an offensive nickname or with a nicknames that advertises some random nonsense. If you don't like it then leave the server that YOU don't own or pay for.

As server admin, you already have the right and ability to show others the damn door if they have a username you don't like. That's sufficient control to "run a good server." You do not have the right to harass them by changing their nickname, doitlikedebbiediddallas.

No. Just no. If you don't like the server, leave. Admins Administer the server they own. If I want a specific Naming scheme, I can set it rather than make every user change their full on username and account.
I run a server that's split into 3 segments for different games/communities, allowing the admins/users to change their nickname to the corresponding in game character is critical.
I'd like to take it step further and block specific users form change their nicknames to something after I've set it.
@Arch-Stalker - You should have removed your child from that server the moment the bullying started and blocked the users involved, this is a classic example of wanting to technology solve a parenting issue.-6 -
I think it's okay for server admins and owners to remove a nickname if they think it is inappropriate or goes against the server rules, but I see no reason for an admin to change a user's nickname. I think that changing a nickname gives a lot of unnecessary power to admins, and I think that being able to remove a nickname from a user is enough to make sure the nickname is appropriate and doesn't break server rules. A nickname on a server is what a person wants to be called there, and in a way, that's free speech. I don't think that should be taken away, and even if it was, I don't think it should be changed into something the user did not agree on.

yes girl this is what we need, but discord corporation doesn't taking any action against this, I'm tired of being bullied from my fav server , and the mod try to troll my nickname just because , i was being so attractive to server members and he was not . i did not mean to. perhaps i was to funny, and the moderator just get jealous of me. 2/10 mod hates me , and they show their hatred by making troll of my nickname, i wish there were setting that we can disable nickname form being changed by an horrible mod and comfortable environment. and I am not afraid of moderators . because i believe discord corporation support will able to change and do what we as customers asking for a little changing that can remove many anxiety to other server members .

I know this is quite old but I very much like this suggestion. Although I would change it to "option to disable my nickname in a server." Then you either can have a nickname and therefore give people the right to change it or you dont have one. I feel like this is a nice middle-ground for mods and general server members.

I'm aware that this thread is pretty old but what they should do is let you manually block a certain user from changing your nick. It would help with the inappropriate nick thing also, and since there's usually only one troll mod, this would be pretty efficient.

@Digitaldreamer7 And that is exactly the case of someone who knows nothing about parenting giving advice on parenting. My son has been diagnosed with autism spectrum and the server in question is a small server held by his friends who all have similar diagnoses. My son does not have any other friends, so your solution is to tell him to leave his only friends? Sure they are crappy friends, but for a lonely child even crappy friends are better that none. We've tried to talk with their parents, but they don't really care. Whereas if discord did disable the name changing this would actually take away a tool for bullying. Admins have been able to deal with offensive nicknames way before discord ever even existed without resorting to forced name changes and I really don't see it as a proper option to have. It's just too easy to abuse, which is exactly what is happening here.

@Arch-Stalker I am a admin on a discord server and have high positions on many discord servers and I am also part of best buddies club... for one I would like to say I that I invite your son on my discord where there are many nice people and I will make sure nothing bad will be said to your child so if you would like that let me know... I can also create a new server with some friends that I am sure would love to be friends with your son (I hope I don't sound weird or anything) and even if you say no I hope he finds the friends out there that treat him well

Also yes I agree there are some problems with nick name changing abilities that the we the admins have but we can't have people going around with inappropriate and sometimes frankly rude nick names... so that is where I agree maybe doing it where you block someone singular from being able to do it so they can't keep changing it... this has nothing to do about free speech just to let the few that said something about it not allowing free speech if mods and admin can change nick names... I mean what if someone had white supremacist as a nick name is that really what you want to be shown on your discord? It has everything to do tho with someone bullying others and that is wrong tho for some people changing you nick name to something reasonable from something that is crazy is not bullying and yes people do have a point (and I understand some can't leave for whatever reason) that if you don't like the nick name tell them and try to come to middle ground and if you can't then report and leave (if that person does it enough times he/ she will be banned from discord and removed as an admin)

Seconded the suggestion to revise this to "disable nicknaming," since that fixes most potential problems with a user blocking admin-side nicknames and then trolling with theirs.

Hey I am also facing the same issues. I would like Discord to please add a feature where members of a server can have more advanced privacy settings including changing names. The admin on the server I am on, has enabled everyone else to change my nickname and I can't do anything about it. At times it's funny but most of the time it's super annoying and mean and even had a nickname put as "youshouldhavebeenaborted". No one deserves this. It is cruel for the admin to misuse and abuse their authority in order to harass others. It is a free nation and people should have the right to have more priavcy and safety on social media platforms. I hope discord reads these comments about changing names not just to stop harrassment but also ensure safety and security on such platforms.

Yes, indeed, disabling nickname changing should be a thing. In a small server I'm in with some friends my name keeps getting changed to immature word combinations, slurs, etc. and I've gotten sick of it. It's basically bullying and when I asked the people responsible to stop, they just laughed, said "cry more" and demanded that I grow a pair because "imagine getting offended over a word".
Plus, whenever I'm in VC with them, the moment I try to ask them to stop they disconnect me or move me to another channel. And then they mock me for not having the power to change nicknames myself, which they will not give me.
I get that some servers may want to remove "offensive" nicknames, but when people bully you with the nickname change feature, it's going too far and there needs to be a way to stop it.

i think there should be a way to block admins but then again shouldnt people just ask to change their nicknames or something? if someone isnt cooperating just kick them or leave the server if you dont like the nickname they give you. why in heck would someone still stay in a server if someone is bullying or harassing them? thats just plain stupid, just leave the damn server!

i know this is old but these seem like toxic servers, just leave. as a mod lots of people join with inappropriate names it's much easier to give them a normal or censored name. taking that away means more blocking people. it's much easier just to enforce a normal name. sounds like all of your kids are simply too young and immature for discord

I would like to add my support to this idea. The option for others to prevent you from changing your nickname AND for them to be able to is absurd. People can change your name to slurs, to things they know you hate, people can be deadnamed, and so on. You should be able to mark that you do not want others to change your nickname. If the server requires a PG or G rated name, you should be able to set it yourself. They can always ban if you do not comply with the rules of the server. This is a far better solution than to allow people to force a name upon you of their choosing in order for you to participate in the community. I hate it.

why would you want to be a part of a community that does this? news flash, you don't. having mods unable to change your name is not going to fix the toxicity, transphobia, or racism you will face in said server. just leave.
again, as a mod it would be nice to be able to change someone's name from something like "nickgerr" to "nick G" and such and such. taking this away would be more unnecessary banning

This just happened to me! MOD just changed my nickname; as a "joke" for him and to embarrass me in the community. Love the streamer, love the community. But when you get a MOD with a too much power and jokes about kicking you out of a group(s) within the community (just to be funny) and then changes your name, (again, just to be funny). Yea, they are having loads of fun! This guy is having loads of fun, at my expense. I'm being FF bullied in front of the community. WTF!

Yes please, to have the option to enable or disable nickname edit for the user is not much. A good mod can ask the user if its really important for his server platform to let them edit names or if the user is using inappropriate names. Anyways, Mods always have the power to kick or ban the user if it isn't adhering to the set rules of the server.

No, because this just lets people join with offensive/Troll names and means staff have to ban rather than perhaps a Mute/Change name request.

I am dealing with this in a server where a mod constantly changes my nickname to insults and derogatory terms and ther server owner doesn't care because they're a long time friend of theirs. It's gotten to the point where they appointed me a server role with a built in insulting emote that I cannot remove.

OK So i got the idea 2 sides
users can't change their names but admins can (this can be enabled)
why would you allow this? because offencive names of a user joining the channel?
then ban them.
the opposit argument is a user having their name changed to include offensive terms and slurs is Actually punching down which discord are fine with.
the argument is "Leave the server"
just have a feature to lock the NAME, if the name is offensive it's against TOS right? so ban the user.
also what's stopping users from putting offensive IMAGES up instead?
