Discord update reduced accessibility
Hey, one of my dearest pals has informed me that the desktop version of Discord stopped working with his screen reader recently. He says he went through your customer support system (Zendesk or whatever client you’re using) and the moderator/supporter informed him it has to be on his end. I rather doubt this is the case, considering I used to be a game supporter. I know that one tactic to save face for a social media company(usually one that doesn’t value user feedback or clear communication with its own community) is for the company to take the user through their support system as quickly and robotically as possible by using euphemisms. “It’s all on your end” is usually one of them, which is sometimes true— but in this case it’s particularly disheartening. I’d like to ask Discord to fix their client to be compatible with screen readers, both desktop and application. I know moderators and supporters can’t promise anything for the developers, but the company should make this happen regardless—considering screen readers are the only way for people with a visual disability to interact online. It has to be on Discord’s end to incorporate the screenreader. Please consider this Discord, that it is “passive” discrimination to expect my buddy to conform like any other user when his situation is clearly different. It’s ableistic to just blame his screenreader for the fact Discord is unaccessible on the Desktop Client. He is literally excluded out of the Discord community for having no choice but to rely on the screenreader. (You see the subtle logic right? Telling him that it’s all on his end for having to use the screenreader is basically blaming him for being excluded due to a difference he can’t control.) This is not the same as an incompatibility of software because you’re choosing to use the “wrong browser” or a mac vrs a PC something. Please fix whatever incompatibility it is, it was probably due to a Discord update.
